Identifying your Preferred Learning Style Why is it important for learners to know their preferred leaning style? How would one benefit from knowing their preferred learning style? Each individual has their own preferred learning style. The three primary leaning styles are Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic. Throughout the lesson you will be presented with definitions, examples and indicators of the primary styles of learning. Links are provided to allow you to explore each of the styles of learning, to review the information or to participate in a learning style assessment that will solidify your knowledge of which learning style best benefits YOU! Click one of the links below to begin exploring the three learning styles or click on the video below to see examples of the learning styles. At any point you can utilize the tabs at the bottom of each screen to navigate freely. You are an individual! No one learns exactly the same as you! Knowing your preferred learning style will assist you academically, personally and professionally! Auditory Learning Data suggests that 50% of learners prefer Visual, 30% prefer kinesthetic and 20% prefer auditory learning. Determine which style you prefer! Visual Learning Expected outcome: Adult learners will be able to identify, describe and list five unique characteristics or examples for each of the three main styles of learning. Auditory Learning Style Individuals with this preferred style of learning learn best from the spoken word.  These learners love the lectures.  They gain and retain from words.  They prefer to have verbal explanations rather than the written word. Methods to assist with teaching to Auditory Learners Utilize: Video tapes Audio tapes Books on tape Melodies, rhythms and beats to reinforce information Characteristics of Auditory Learners acquire knowledge by reading aloud remember by verbalizing lessons to themselves sit where they can hear but needn't pay attention to what is happening in front may not coordinate colors or clothes, but can explain why they are wearing what they are wearing and why hum or talk to themselves or others when bored Quick Tips for Auditory Learners • Record lectures and then listen to them • Repeat material out loud and in your own words • Discuss materials in your study groups • Read textbooks aloud • Listen to wordless background music while studying Children practicing active listening Auditory Learning Review Home Visual Learning Kinesthetic Learning

Visual Learning Style Visual Learning Review Home Auditory Learning Individuals with this preferred style of learning learn best from material or information that is presented in a diagram or in pictures.  Instructors that utilize visual aids, videos, and maps capture easily the attention of these learners. Kinesthetic Learning Style Individuals with this preferred learning style of learning enjoy doing.  They gain so much from touching, feeling and actually doing something.  These students enjoy lab opportunities.  Often, they leave a lecture to go out and build, create or experience the topic or subject discussed.  Methods to assist with teaching to Kinesthetic Learners Utilize: Models Puzzles Blocks Computers Projects Characteristics of Kinesthetic Learners need to be active and take frequent breaks speak with their hands and with gestures remember what was done, but have difficulty recalling what was said or seen find reasons to tinker or move when bored rely on what they can directly experience or perform activities such as cooking, construction, engineering and art help them perceive and learn enjoy field trips and tasks that involve manipulating materials sit near the door or someplace else where they can easily get up and move around are uncomfortable in classrooms where they lack opportunities for hands-on experience communicate by touching and appreciate physically expressed encouragement, such as a pat on the back Quick Tips for Kinesthetic Learners • Take study breaks often • Learn new material while doing something active (e.g., read a textbook while on a treadmill) • Chew gum while studying • Work while standing • Try to take classes with instructors who encourage demonstrations and fieldwork The image shows an example of Kinesthetic or hands on learning Kinesthetic Learning Review Home Auditory Learning Visual Learning

Do you: •Enjoy talking. •Talk aloud to themselves. •Like explaining things to others. •Remember names. •Recognize variations in a person’s tone of voice. •Understand concepts better by talking about them. •Are distracted by background noise. •Have difficulty following written directions. •Read slowly. •Have difficulty being quiet for extended periods of time. •Like being read to. •Memorize things by repeating them aloud. •Enjoy music. •Whisper the words on the page as they read. •Hum or sing often. •Like being around other people. •Enjoy the performing arts. Kinesthetic Learning Style Review Quick Tips for Kinesthetic learners Are you an Kinesthetic Learner? How many of the characteristics of Kinesthetic Learning do you have? Do you: Touch, feel, and handle things. Try it themselves first. They will not want to see a demonstration. Show rather than tell. Learns best when physically engaged in a "hands on" activity. In the classroom, benefits from a lab setting where he/she can manipulate materials to learn new information. Learns best when he/she can be physically active in the learning environment. Benefits from instructors who encourage in-class demonstrations, "hands on" student learning experiences, and fieldwork outside the classroom.
