NORTHWEST COMMUNITY COLLEGE Mission Reciprocal advisory role to the College Board of Governors. Assist the College in achieving its goals by… …making recommendations and decisions in the context of the overall good of the College and community.

NORTHWEST COMMUNITY COLLEGE How we do what we do? Make suggestions and/or comments about Education Council… –functions and responsibilities, –issues we are or should be addressing, –ways we can help improve educational services, –and more. Participate in discussion groups on educational issues identified by… –Education Council members, –committees or task forces, and… –Program cluster groups In the spirit of improving as an educational institution of excellence the College community is invited to;

NORTHWEST COMMUNITY COLLEGE Why we do what we do! The College Act! –Yes… we are mandated by legislation! 14(1) “Each institution, other than the Justice Institute of British Columbia, must have an education council.” but, more importantly, from a humanistic perspective… To have a voice! –Education Council gives the college community a collective voice to the policies and issues that affect post-secondary education.

NORTHWEST COMMUNITY COLLEGE Two Documents that Inform The ‘Strategic Plan’ –Required by the College Act –Contains the ‘Vision’ and ‘Mission’ statements –Also cites the College ‘Values and Operating Principles’ –Focuses on five themes Students Educational and Program Excellence Employees Community Partnerships Institutional Planning, Growth and Evaluation The ‘Educational Plan’ –Also required be the College Act –Provides direction for program and curriculum development

NORTHWEST COMMUNITY COLLEGE Responsibilities of Ed. Council Recommendation of principles and polices with regard to educational policy. Make decisions and report to the Board with respect to principles and policies related to the educational policy of NWCC Facilitate communication among faculty, students, and administration and the Board with respect to the educational policy of the College. Special Projects, as directed by the Board (e.g. recommendations or reports)

NORTHWEST COMMUNITY COLLEGE 23 (1) An education council must advise the board, and the board must seek advice from the education council, on the development of educational policy for the following matters: a)the mission statement and the educational goals, objectives, strategies and priorities of the institution; b)proposals about implementation of courses or programs leading to certificates, diplomas or degrees, including the length of or hours for courses or programs; c)reports after implementation by the institution without prior review by the education council of i.new non-credit programs, or ii.programs offered under service contract Advisory Role of Ed. Council (con’t) 23 (1) An education council must advise… j.terms for affiliation with other post secondary bodies; k.consultation with community and program advisory groups concerning the institution's educational programs; l.qualifications for admission policies; m.criteria for awarding certificates, diplomas and degrees; n.other matters specified by the board.

NORTHWEST COMMUNITY COLLEGE Education council has the power and duty to: a.set policies concerning examinations and evaluation of student performance; b.set policies concerning student withdrawal from courses, programs and the institution; c.set criteria for academic standing, academic standards and the grading system; d.set criteria for awards recognizing academic excellence; e.set policies and procedures for appeals by students on academic matters and establish a final appeal tribunal for these appeals; f.set curriculum content for courses leading to certificates, diplomas or degrees Requirements of Ed. NORTHWEST COMMUNITY COLLEGE (a) curriculum evaluation for determining whether (i) courses or programs, or course credit, from another institution, university or other body are equivalent to courses or programs, or course credit, at the institution, or (ii) courses or programs, or course credit, from one part of the institution are equivalent to courses or programs, or course credit, in another part of the institution; (b) other responsibilities of the board that, on the initiative of the board, the board and the education council agree are subject to joint approval.
