SYMMETRY IN TESSELLATIONS

TESSELLATIONS

TESSELLATION A tessellation is a design made from copies of a basic design element that cover a surface without gaps or overlaps. What is the basic design element that repeats over and over? What types of symmetry do you see in the design as a whole? Remember a tessellation goes on forever in all directions.

CAN THE FOLLOWING SHAPES TESSELLATE? Yes No

MAKE A TESSELLATION 1. Supplies: 1 business card, scissors, tape 2.Make a jagged or curvy cut along one side of the card. 3.Tape the portion you cut off to the opposite side. 4.Repeat steps for remaining straight side.

5.Place your “basic design element” somewhere on a blank sheet of paper. 6.Trace the shape. 7.Slide the shape. It should fit perfectly and interlock with the previous shape. Trace next shape. 8.Repeat process until ENTIRE page is covered. 9.Color the tessellation. Be creative. MAKE A TESSELLATION
