1 Tessellations M.C. Escher

2 M.C. Escher: Maurits Cornelis Escher ( ) was a Dutch graphic artist who was influenced by math and inspired by the music of Bach.

3 Tessellation Repeating pattern made up of one or more interlocking shapes that fit together like puzzle pieces with no gaps or overlaps.

4 Template A shape or cut out used as a guide in making a pattern with accuracy, as when using a stencil.

5 Types of Tessellations
Translation Rotation Reflection

6 Translation A translation is made by sliding the image over and copying it next to its original.

7 Rotation A rotation is made by rotating or turning the image on its axis and copying it.

8 Reflection A reflection is made by drawing a mirror image of its original beside, beneath, or above it.

18 Procedures: 1st…trace your square poster board in your sketchbook 3 times and practice making one example of Translation, one example of Rotation and one example of Reflection.

19 1. Choose one of the 3 types of tessellations.
2. Get one light color piece of construction paper and one darker color. Do not use black or any other really dark color. 3. LIGHTLY draw a 3” grid on both 12”x18” sheets of construction paper using a ruler and pencil. 4. Use the 3”x3” card to create your template. 5. Trace the template on both grids. 6. Erase the grid lines. 7. Cut out the template shapes from the darker paper. 8. Create an alternating pattern by placing the darker shapes to every other square on the lighter paper’s grid. 9. Once you have every piece in the correct place, glue them down. 10. Let the glue dry completely. 11. Use a pencil to draw details on each shape. 12. Trace over the pencil drawing with black Sharpie marker.
