Atoms and Elements Elements identified by Number of protons in the nucleus of its atom Each element has a unique atomic number-the number of protons in its nucleus Carbon – 6Oxygen – 8Iron – 26 However, the number of neutrons will vary Same protons, different neutrons = isotopes isotopes identified by mass number
