Periodic Table LO: recap the structure of atoms recognise Groups and Periods in the Periodic Table Discuss, copy and label the structure of this Helium atom

All ATOMS have PROTONS, NEUTRONS AND ELECTRONS. The periodic table tells us how many of each an atom has.

There’s antimony, arsenic, aluminium, selenium And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium And nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium And iron, americium, ruthenium, uranium. Europium, zirconium, lutetium, vanadium And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium And gold and protactinium and indium and gallium And iodine and thorium and thulium and thallium. There’s yttrium, ytterbium, actinium, rubidium And boron, gadolinium, niobium, iridium And strontium and silicon and silver and samarium And bismuth, bromine, lithium, beryllium and barium. There’s holmium and helium and hafnium and erbium And phosphorus and francium and fluorine and terbium And manganese and mercury, molybdenum, magnesium, Dysprosium and scandium and cerium and caesium And lead. Praseodymium and platinum, plutonium, Palladium, promethium, potassium, polonium And tantalum, technetium, titanium, tellurium And cadmium and calcium and chromium and curium. There’s sulphur, californium and fermium, berkelium And also mendelevium, einsteinium, nobelium And argon, krypton, neon, radon, xenon, zinc and rhodium And chlorine, carbon, cobalt, copper, tungsten, tin and sodium. These are the only ones of which the news has come to Harvard And there may be many others, but they haven’t been discovered! How many elements do you think there are? http://uk.youtu be.com/watch ?v=SmwlzwG MMwc

Group 7 halogens Group 8 Noble gases

Group 1(Alkali metals) reaction with water demo To discuss, and then add to your description on the periodic table Why are the group 1 metals kept in oil? Why colour did the universal indicator turn and what does this tell you about the solution formed? What explosive gas do you think is given off when an alkali metal reacts with water? Hint: think of the POP test

GROUPS IN THE PEROIDIC TABLE WORKSHEET Extension- periodic table crossword

The copper envelope a Fold the copper foil into an envelope b Wear eye protection and light the Bunsen burner. c Hold the envelope in the tongs and heat strongly in the Bunsen flame for 5 minutes. You will need to have the air hole fully open. d Carefully place the envelope on the heat resistant mat and allow to cool for 20 minutes E Complete peoridic table crossword as you wait e Open the envelope and compare the inside to the outside surface. Questions to answer in full sentences in your book 1. How do you know a reaction has occurred? 2. What gas in the air is the copper reacting with? 3.What is the name of the compound formed? 4. What colour is the inside of the colour envelope and why? 5. How does this reaction of copper compare with Group 1 metals reaction with oxygen? 6. Write a word equation for this reaction

WANTED! Have you seen this element? Do not approach this person as they are very reactive. His close friends are also very reactive He has an violent relationship with water He likes to hang around and have explosive relationships the group 7 girls like Chloe Chlorine Appearance: 19 protons, 20 neutrons 19 electrons Last seen in Group 1, period 4 Approach with caution!!!!!

Sometimes she likes to hang around with her own kind in pairs She easily makes alighting relationships She has a special relationship with 2 hydrogen atoms Appearance- 8 protons, 8 neutrons and 8 electrons Last seen in group 6, period 2 WANTED! Have you seen this element?

She is a floaty gas with a wicked personality This can be good as bacteria do not like to be around her She is best friends with the group 7 girls She finds the group 1 boys very attractive Appearance 17 protons, 18 neutrons, 17 protons She was last seen in Group 7 period 3

WANTED! Have you seen this element? He is a strong man and likes to hang out with the other strong dense guys He can be a hot and electric guy to touch. He has a magnetic personality He doesn’t like oxygen because she makes him change to an unattractive rusty orange colour He was last seen with the metal gang in period 4 Appearance- 26 protons, 30 neutrons and 26 electrons

He’s a bit o f a loner as he likes to keep himself to himself He has a bright response to electricity He has never and says he doesn’t want a girlfriend Appearance- 10 protons, 10 neutrons and 10 electrons He was last seen in Group 8 period 2 WANTED! Have you seen this element?

Your homework- Due next Friday Design a wanted poster for one of the first 20 elements You poster should include, a description of your element. Make it a fun description if possible! Appearance- how many protons, neutrons and electrons Where it was last seen eg. Group and period
