Interim Life Safety Measures

Eleven Administration Actions of Interim Life Safety Measures ÷Ensure free and unobstructed exits. Personnel receive additional training when alternative exits are designated. Areas under construction shall maintain exit routes for construction workers at all times and shall be inspected daily. ÷Ensure free and unobstructed access for emergency crews (Fire, EMS, Police). ÷Ensure fire alarm, detection, and suppression systems are in good working order. A temporary but equivalent system shall be provided when any fire system is impaired. When a fire alarm or sprinkler system is impaired for more then 4 hours in a 24 hour period, the fire department is notified and a fire watch is maintained.

Eleven Administration Actions of Interim Life Safety Measures ÷Ensure temporary construction partitions are smoke tight and built of noncombustible or limited combustible materials that will not contribute to the development or spread of fire. ÷Provide additional fire fighting equipment and training personnel in their use. ÷Prohibit smoking throughout the organization’s buildings and adjacent to construction areas. ÷Conduct a minimum of two fire drills per shift each quarter.

Eleven Administration Actions of Interim Life Safety Measures ÷Develop and enforce storage, housekeeping, and debris removal practices that reduce the building’s flammable and combustible fire load to the lowest feasible level. ÷Increase hazard surveillance of buildings, grounds, and equipment, with special attention to excavations, construction areas, construction storage, and field offices. ÷Train personnel to compensate for impaired structural or compartmentalization features of fire safety. ÷Conduct organization wide safety education to promote awareness of LSC ® deficiencies, construction hazards, and ILSM.

Know your area of refuge   Area of refuge in the hospitals are on the other side of the fire doors.   Area of refuge in off site clinics and offices is to evacuate the building.

Evacuation Requirements A minimum of two exits must be available at all times.

Exits and Exit Corridors Required fire exits are marked with exit signs. All patient corridors are exit corridors. Nothing can be stored in the hall. Exits must be clear at all times. Alternate exits must be identified and maintained. Correct Incorrect

Fire Extinguishers ÷Fire extinguisher must be available within75 feet. ÷Must be inspected monthly. ÷Must also have an annual test…look for cards like ---> ÷Employees should know how to use the extinguisher using the PASS system. PULL, AIM, SQUEEZE and SWEEP

Access to fire alarm equipment must be clear at all times. Incorrect Incorrect

No Smoking Smoking is not allowed in any hospital owned buildings. Smoking is only allowed in designated areas.

Inappropriate Storage ÷Storage areas must be neat and orderly. ÷Combustible materials such as paper, boxes, and plastics must be kept to a minimum. ÷Trash must be removed daily. ÷There must be 18” of clearance between the bottom of the sprinkler head and the top of the storage.

Reporting Problems ÷All problems should be reported to the Safety Office at Ext ÷Safety personnel on call 24 hr. / 7 days. ÷The Safety Office will follow-up on each call within 3 working days. ÷Any situation that you feel requires immediate attention should reported to Special Police at Ext {Emergency Codes call 7999}

When are Interim Life Safety Measures Performed? Interim Life Safety Measures are a series of administrative actions that must be taken to compensate temporarily for the hazards posed by exiting Life Safety Code deficiencies. ILSMs are also initiated when life safety systems such as the fire alarm and sprinkler systems are not working or disabled for more than 4 hours in a 24 hour period.
