High-risk fraternities, low-risk fraternities, commercial bars High-risk fraternities: –Typically have skewed gender ratios –Gender segregation is evident –Women’s bathrooms are filthy (clogged toilets, vomit, etc.) –Degrade women –Usually no committed relationships –More sexually charged environment –Rarely is there any conversation, if there is, it is strictly flirtatious Low- risk fraternities: –Typically equal number of women and men –Social atmosphere was friendly –Considerable interaction between women and men –Couples are acceptable First commercial bar: –Older students –Live entertainment every night of the week –Atmosphere= friendly and relaxed –Conversations occurred Second commercial bar: –More populated with younger students –Much smaller, not as crowded usually –Atmosphere= mellow and relaxed –Conversations occurred –When the bar got crowded, chairs were removed (no more sitting), music volume was turned up (hard to hear people talk) and the number of visibly drunk people increased. Became more like a high- risk fraternities without the brothers controlling the territory and no place to “be alone”

If you do this as a girl, you’re a “slut”. “Hooking up” is defined differently between men and women –Men say: “When you’re really drunk and meet up with a woman you sort of know, or possibly don’t know at all and don’t care about. You go home with her with the intention of getting as much sexual, physical pleasure as she’ll give you, which can range anywhere from kissing to intercourse, without any strings attached. –Women say: “Kissing and petting but no sexual intercourse. Many women say hooking up is disappointing because they wanted longer- term relationships. –70% of hook ups never talk again and try to avoid one another; 26% may actually hear from them or talk to them again, and 4% may actually go on a date, which can lead to a relationship. –Hooking up gets “tiring” for women after a while. It is only fun in the beginning. For men, it lasts much longer, most don’t get bored or tired with it until second semester of junior year. Fraternity life involves limited opportunities for meaningful relationships All about the brothers “The hill and girlfriends don’t mix” Degrade women: “Walk of shame”= when fraternity brothers come out on the porches of their houses the morning after parties and heckle women walking by, assuming that these women spent the night at fraternity houses and that the men they were with did not car enough about them to drive them home. “Chatter”= when an unknown woman sleeps over at the house, brothers yell degrading remarks out the window at her as she leaves the next morning. “Observing other brothers have sex”= brothers watch other brothers having sex with an unknown women or a women they barely knew

Promote more positive interactions between men and women Provide men and women with the opportunity to interact in meaningful ways Add places to sit Lower the volume of the music Convert high- risk fraternities into low-risk Provide more non-alcoholic beverages Get involved in campaigns such as “No means no” College administrators should provide counseling and educational programs that increase awareness of date rape Try to change attitudes, values and behaviors.
