3 Warm up Read: Kelsey’s Story Class Discussion: Did Kelsey do anything wrong on the day of her rape? Kelsey decided not to report the rape. What are some reasons why she would not have wanted to report it? What do you think Kelsey should have done immediately after the rape?

8 Consent Law 1. Age of Consent: 16 years old
A person can legally have sex at 16 years old 2. 4 year age difference: (applies at 16 and 17 yrs. old) At 16 and 17 years old, a person can legally have sex but only with someone who is less than 4 years older than them At age 18, the laws no longer apply

Crime: display your private parts in public

10 Sexual Assault and Battery Law
Crime: to force someone to have sex or engage in sexual behavior (felony) Crime: to touch someone on a private area that does not want to be touched (misdemeanor) Crime: to write a sexual note to someone who does not want to receive it (misdemeanor) Crime: to verbally harass someone sexually (misdemeanor) Note: 2 misdemeanor could equal a felony

13 How can I reduce my risk of sexual assault?
• Do not use alcohol or drugs. • Be aware of your surroundings. • Use the buddy system. • Walk with confidence – you look stronger. • Avoid walking alone. Stay in well-traveled and well-lit areas. • Lock car and house doors. • Be assertive.

14 How to help a friend Listen without judging. Believe your friend.
Maintain confidentiality. Let them know the assault or abuse was not their fault. Let them know they did what was necessary to prevent further harm. Let them know that you care about them. Encourage them to seek medical attention. Encourage them to talk about the assault with an advocate, mental health professional, or someone they trust. Let them know they do not have to manage this crisis alone.
