Cause-and-Effect Chart (Practice Book pg. 12) (Why does it happen?) Effect (What happens?) Climbers leave Grits on the mountain. Axel and Dag set out to rescue Grits. He thinks Grits might fall from Monkey Ledge. Axel decides to climb up and get Grits in spite of the storm. He reaches monkey ledge safely. Axel climbs carefully, using all the proper equipment. Electricity from the storm fills the air. The hair on Axel’s head and arms stands up. He free climbs the rest of the way down. Partway down the cliff, Axel runs out of rope.

Dag’s decision is the effect. “Stay where you are,” he said. “I’m going for help.” Why does Dag say this? Axel cannot find a handhold and is stranded on the cliff. Dag’s decision is the effect.
