Outline 1) Do you know how to recognize academic articles when you see them? 2) Do you know how to search for subject headings in databases? 3) You've found a great article on your topic. Do you know how to find out what newer articles have mentioned that article in their bibliographies? 4) Do you know how to find articles in trade publications? 5) Do you know how to find white papers? 6) Can you name at least three different ways you can get research help?

Academic Articles 1. Do you know how to recognize academic research articles when you see them?

Academic articles Is this an academic article? How do you know?

This journal is peer-reviewed, but this article isn’t.

Academic articles Questions to ask include:  Is it longer than a few pages?  Is it academic in tone? (Is it difficult to read? Is the language technical?)  Does it include a list of references/bibliography?

Searching for subject headings 2. Do you know how to search for subject headings in databases?

Business Source Complete: Newer articles 3. You've found a great article on your topic. Do you know how to find out what newer articles have mentioned that article in their bibliographies? Such articles are usually on related topics.

Articles in trade publications 4. Do you know how to find articles in trade publications?

Trade publications There are many trade publication articles in Business Source Complete. On the first screen in BSC, if you click on the ‘more options’ link near the bottom of the screen … (This trick can save you a lot of time.)

White Papers (in a nutshell) “White paper” means different things to different people In Business: It is generally a non-academic, but informative paper written on a topic of interest by a company or organization, and published informally (usually on the Internet) It may also be called  position paper  preliminary research findings/paper/report

Finding white papers 5. Do you know how to find white papers?

Finding white papers There are a few tips for finding white papers in the BUS 381 research guide

Finding white papers  Search HR company websites  white paper or “white paper” E.g., Hewitt Associates’ website:  Use a search engine like Google  “white paper” “human resources” [plus: your topic]  Use “advanced search” option in Google  To search a company website  To limit your search to, say, only PDFs

Google: Advanced Search

Sample search using Google’s ‘Advanced Search’

Of course, search results will vary.

Getting help 6. Can you name at least three different ways you can get research help?
