One very popular Halloween decoration is made using a knife... and a candle... a pumpkin...

to create a... Jack-o-lantern

Jack-o-lantern is short for “Jack of the Lantern” It comes from an Irish myth about a man named “Stingy Jack.” Stingy Jack was a drunkard, a liar, and someone who could never be trusted.

Stingy Jack was so dishonest he even cheated the Devil.

When Jack died, he couldn’t go to Heaven and the Devil told him he wasn’t welcome in Hell. The Devil gave Jack a burning ember...

and Jack placed it inside a carved-out turnip to create a lantern.

Today, Jack’s ghost continues to roam the earth, carrying this lantern to guide his way.

The custom of making Jack-o-Lanterns grew out of this Irish legend of Stingy Jack. Irish immigrants brought the custom to America but discovered that pumpkins made better lanterns than... turnipsbeets potatoes
