2. How did Halloween get its name?
Halloween was originally called All Hallows’ Eve. It means the evening before All Saints’ Day. “Hallow” is an Old English word for “saint.” This was shortened to Hallowe’en and then changed to Halloween. Satanists have taken on Hallowe’en as one of their three main seasonal days of celebration. Hallowe’en refers to the time from sunset on October 31st, when people used to start the festivals of All Saints with a night watch, to sunrise on November 1st.

3. When did Halloween start to be celebrated?
The Halloween celebration began during the Middle Ages, which was about 600 years ago, by the Roman Catholic church

4. What is the connection between Salem and Halloween?
There really are no connections. People refer them to be connected because of the whole idea of witches with the costumes trick or treaters wear for Halloween.

5. Salem
The Salem witch trials occurred in Massachusetts between 1692 and Over 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft and 20 were executed. In the end, the colony confessed that the trials were a mistake and rewarded those whose families were convicted. Meanwhile, the stories of the trials has become synonymous with paranoia and injustice, and it continues to fascinate the popular imagination more than 300 years later.

Halloween is a annual holiday, which occurs on October 31st , the eve of Western Christian feast of All Hallows. This holiday is observed all over the world. It began 600 years ago during the Middle Ages by the Roman Catholic Church. On this holiday, children dress up in costumes and go trick or treating. Halloween is mostly about festivals.

7. How old is too old to go trick-or-treating?
I don’t think there is an actual appropriate age to go trick or treating. Anyone can go weather just for fun or if they’re just taking their kids. It’s fun for all ages!

8. Why are black and orange the colors that are used to represent Halloween?

Black symbolizes darkness. It also refers to the side of Halloween that deals with the festival of all the dead, in which it was once assumed to be.

Orange represents harvest time because during that time everything looks orange in autumn.

11. What do pumpkins have to do with Halloween?
People carve pumpkins and put lanterns inside them which makes the pumpkin become a Jack O’Lantern. The name “Jack O’Lantern” comes from the Irish legend about a man named Stingy Jack.

12. What is the story behind the legend of Jack-o-lantern and where did it get its name?
“According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years. Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since. ”
The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O'Lantern.“

13. Why couldn’t carved pumpkins be used for Halloween in Ireland in the 14th century?
Pumpkins are resident to America and did not really get refined in Europe until the 16th century.

14. What vegetable was originally used for jack-o-lanterns?
Turnips were originally used because they look like skeleton heads. The heads were considered to contain wisdom and spirit and were stuck to the door to scare away demons by the Celts. The Irish did it to remember Stingy Jack who wandered the earth with a turnip lit up.
