History of Democracy

Athens The democracy emerged in ancient Athens, but it was only men who got the right to vote. The women and the slaves were not allowed to vote.

Rome The real power of Rome laid in the hands of aristocrats and high goverment officials and was divided according diffrent institutions. In 1215 the King introduced a bill of rights called Magna Charta Libertatum. Nearly 50 years later King John came into conflict whit his people and these events gave birth to a first assembly of state representatives which would later reshape and become the parliament made up the House of Commons and the House of Lords. 16th and 17th century Poland The democracy in Poland belonged to nobles and rich people. The women had no right to vote. The system was different from others, because it was not based on a majority vote but raher on a fully binding agreement among all representatives.

Humans right declaration-1948 The tragic events of World War II brought forth the impotance of the notion of basic human rights for all living humans, rights which cannot be violated by any government including democratic governments an assembly of the United Nations organization drawn up a declaration of basic human rights. It specified that all humans are born free and equal, all posses the right to live, work and rest.
