High School 101: TOPIC HERE Recognize techniques used by online predators: o Grooming: trying to connect to a child or getting the child to be comfortable with him/her If an unknown person is trying to “get to know you”, let someone know immediately. Remember, predators often disguise themselves as children, but are adults! o Fishing: trying to figure out where a child lives by asking about hobbies or interests (“what is your favorite baseball team?”, “what was the weather like today?”) DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY OF THIS INFORMATION!!! o Mirroring: trying to mimic an emotion a child feels, stating they understand how the child feels o DO NOT FALL FOR THIS!!!

High School 101: ONLINE SAFETY Refuse to give out personal information o If someone is requesting personal information, do not give it to them!! o Once you’ve given your information, a person may want to meet you. o Below is a chart located on iSAFE.org regarding meeting “online friends”. This is very dangerous!! Meeting someone you meet online could put your life at risk!

High School 101: Online Safety Respond assertively if you ever feel uncomfortable online. o Exit the program, log off or turn off your computer, tell an adult or call the police o Do not actually respond by writing back or messaging them. You should exit the program and inform an adult. THAT IS YOUR RESPONSE!

High School 101: Online Safety Report to a trusted adult o If you suspect any suspicious behavior or you are made to feel uncomfortable, TELL SOMEONE!! Tell an adult that you trust: parent, teacher, doctor, police officer, etc.

High School 101: Online Safety Tips to follow: o Guard your identifying information (name, gender, age, address, school, teams). o It only takes a little information for a predator to identify you. o Always remember, responsible adults do not pursue relationships with kids and teens. o Make your username generic and anonymous. o Make your online profile generic and anonymous. o Know how to exit an inappropriate website. o Attachments in s from strangers can contain Viruses and Worms. o Pictures are great to hand to a friend, but it's not cool to send them to an Internet 'friend.' o Posting your picture on the Internet gives hackers the chance to change your picture repost it to everyone on the World Wide Web. o Chat room 'friends' are not always who they say they are. o Know the rules about Intellectual Property. Do not illegally download music and movies.

[SC ST SEC ] (A) It is unlawful for a person to: (1) use in a telephonic communication or any other electronic means, any words or language of a profane, vulgar, lewd, lascivious, or an indecent nature, or to communicate or convey by telephonic or other electronic means an obscene text, vulgar, indecent, profane, suggestive, or immoral message to another person; (2) threaten in a telephonic communication or any other electronic means an unlawful act with the intent to coerce, intimidate, or harass another person; (3) telephone or electronically contact another repeatedly, whether or not conversation ensues, for the purpose of annoying or harassing another person or his family;

(4) make a telephone call and intentionally fail to hang up or disengage the connection for the purpose of interfering with the telephone service of another; (5) telephone or contact by electronic means another and make false statements concerning either the death or injury of a member of the family of the person who is telephoned or electronically contacted, with the intent to annoy, frighten, or terrify that person; or (6) knowingly permit a telephone under his control to be used for any purpose prohibited by this section. A person who violates any provision of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined not less than one hundred dollars nor more than five hundred dollars or imprisoned not more than thirty days. SECTION Communicating obscene text messages to other persons without consent. [SC ST SEC ] It is unlawful for a person to anonymously write, print, telephone, transmit a digital electronic file, or by other manner or means communicate, send, or deliver to another person within this State, without that person's consent, any previous obscene text, profane, indecent, vulgar, suggestive, or immoral message. A person who violates the provisions of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined in the discretion of the court or imprisoned not more than three years, or both. You must protect yourself from the pitfalls lurking online.
