Internet Safety KNOW HOW TO STAY SAFE ONLINE

You should never give out certain information over the internet.  Examples include:  Your last name  Your age  Your address  Your school name  Your teacher’s name  Your neighborhood name

If an internet site makes you feel uncomfortable what should you do?  Always tell an adult, such as a parent, teacher, or guardian.  Do not go to that site again, and remove it from your history if you know how.

You “meet” someone on line and they tell you they are in tenth grade. How old are they?  There is no way of knowing.  That is the danger of talking to people on-line. People can tell you anything and you do not know if it is true.  They can show you pictures of anybody and say it is them.  DO NOT TRUST SOMEBODY YOU DO NOT KNOW.  IT COULD BE A PREDATOR-someone who preys upon children and teens in order to hurt them, or have sex with them.

What is the ONLY thing to do if you would like to meet someone you have only met on-line?  TELL YOUR PARENTS, AND HAVE THEM GO WITH YOU.  IF IT REALLY IS A PERSON YOUR OWN AGE IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE A PARENT MEET THEM.  IF IT IS A PREDATOR YOUR PARENT’S PRESENCE WILL SAVE YOU FROM BEING HURT, AND THEY CAN CALL THE POLICE.

What is cyberbullying?  It is sending mean, threatening, or intimidating messages, emails, or texts.  If you receive one DO NOT respond.  Instead, tell a responsible adult, save the message, and if you feel you feel unsafe, allow the adult to report it to the police.  South Carolina has laws to protect you.  REMEMBER, do NOT respond.

Is it okay to give your phone number to someone you have never met if they claim to know a lot of your friends?  NO!!  They may have looked at your profile and saw your friends’ list.  They may know your friends, but that does not mean that they are trustworthy. DO NOT EVER give out a number to someone you do not know.  ALSO, do not send them a picture, even if they send you one first. Remember, they may not be who they say they are.
