We learn about the hardships the families have to endure since the war began (no butter, little fuel or electricity to heat homes) Mrs. Hirsh’s store was closed because she is Jewish. Annemarie is afraid for her friend, Ellen, who is also Jewish.

Chapters 4-6 Preview Kirsti does not like her new shoes because they are made out of fish skin. The girls remember what it was like before the war started. Ellen stays with the Johansen’s and pretends to be their daughter. The soldiers show up trying to find Ellen’s family. They question Annemarie’s parents about where the Rosen’s are. The soldiers believe that Ellen is the daughter of the Johansen (even though she is not). Mrs. Johansen, Annemarie, Kirsti and Ellen go to Uncle Henrik’s house and Mr. Johansen stays behind so the soldiers won’t get suspicious

Chapters 7-9 Preview Ellen is worried about her parents The girls settle in to living at Uncle Henrik’s They pretend that someone has died but inside the coffin are blankets, coats and food. People pretending to be part of Annemarie’s family show up at Uncle Henrik’s house but they are really Jewish people who they are going to help escape Denmark. Ellen’s parents come to Uncle Henrik’s house along with Peter Neilsen

Chapters Preview The soldiers come to Uncle Henrik’s house but leave without knowing what was really happening. The Jewish people, including Ellen and her parents, go with Peter and Mrs. Johansen and hide in Uncle Henrik’s boat. Annemarie has to say goodbye to her friend not knowing when or if she will ever see her again. Annemarie goes to see where her mother is and sees her lying on the ground.

Chapters Preview Mrs. Johansen tells Annemarie that she hurt her ankle and is okay. Annemarie helps her mother back to the house and finds a package that Mr. Rosen dropped. Annemarie has to bring the package to Uncle Henrik because it is very important. Soldiers stop Annemarie but they don’t suspect anything.

Chapters Preview Uncle Henrik tells Annemarie a little bit of the secret plan to get the Rosen's and other Jewish people out of Denmark. The Rosen family is safe in Sweden. The story ends two years in the “future” when the war has ended. Annemarie finds out what really happened to her older sister, Lise. Annemarie hopes that she will one day see her dear friend Ellen now that the war is over.
