Units Of Measurement Before you can use the Formula chart provided, you must know what the symbols stand for and what they measure.

Unit of Measurement Examples The formula for force is Force = mass * acceleration orF=ma This equation is a mathematical way of stating Newton’s Second Law of Motion.

Unit of Measurement Examples Force is measured in Newtons (N) Mass is measured in kilograms (kg) And acceleration is measured in meters per second per second (m/s/s or m/s²)

Therefore,…. if you have a problem that asks for acceleration, and the only numbers you have is a value for Force (ex. 48 N) and mass (ex. 345 kg), you know you can solve the question using the Force formula. if you have a problem that asks for acceleration, and the only numbers you have is a value for Force (ex. 48 N) and mass (ex. 345 kg), you know you can solve the question using the Force formula.

The Answering Questions, Questions In order to answer a TAKS question that requires you to use a the formula chart, you must …

#1. READ THE QUESTION Example: Ryan hit a baseball with an acceleration of 40 m/s². The mass of the baseball is 0.5 kg. What was the force of the swing?

#2 Ask yourself “What am I looking for?” Ryan hit a baseball with an acceleration of 40 m/s². The mass of the baseball is 0.5 kg. What was the force of the swing? In the problem above, you are looking for the force of the swing.

#3. Circle what you are looking for. Ryan hit a baseball with an acceleration of 40 m/s². The mass of the baseball is 0.5 kg. What was the force of the swing?

#4. Ask yourself, “What am I given?” Ryan hit a baseball with an acceleration of 40 m/s². The mass of the baseball is 0.5 kg. What was the force of the swing? In the problem above, you are given both the mass of the baseball, and the acceleration.

#5 Underline what you have been given. Ryan hit a baseball with an acceleration of 40 m/s². The mass of the baseball is 0.5 kg. What was the force of the swing?

#6 Find the correct formula based on given information. Ryan hit a baseball with an acceleration of 40 m/s². The mass of the baseball is 0.5 kg. What was the force of the swing? For this problem the correct formula is F=ma

#7 Write the formula under the problem and substitute then solve. Ryan hit a baseball with an acceleration of 40 m/s². The mass of the baseball is 0.5 kg. What was the force of the swing? F=ma F= 0.5 kg(40 m/s²) F= 20 N

More Complex Problems!?! What is the net force exerted on a 90 kg race car driver while the race car is accelerating from 0 to 44.7 m/s in 4.50 s? Some questions like the one above may require you to use more than one formula.

What is the net force exerted on a 90 kg race car driver while the race car is accelerating from 0 to 44.7 m/s in 4.50 s? F=ma F=90 kg*(a) In this problem you are given the driver’s mass but not the acceleration. (Remember acceleration units are m/s²)

#8. Repeat steps 2-7 using the values that have not been used in the first formula. What is the net force exerted on a 90 kg race car driver while the race car is accelerating from 0 to 44.7 m/s in 4.50 s? a = V (final) – V (initial) = (44.7 m/s - 0) time4.50 s

#9. Solve and substitute a = V(final) – V(initial) = (44.7 m/s - 0) = 44.7 m/s time 4.50 s 4.50 s a = 9.93 m/s² (Use this value in the formula F=ma.) F=ma F = 90 kg*(a) F = 90 kg(9.93 m/s²) F = 894N

Congratulations!!! If you practice these steps, you will be ready to solve any problem on the TAKS exam that will require you to use a formula from the formula chart. Take this time to practice these steps on the TAKS problems in the packet you were given. WE KNOW YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!
