1 Newton’s Second Law If all forces are in balance, object is at equilibrium and does accelerate Newton’s second law applies when forces are unbalanced; a net force causes acceleration If net force is constant, object undergoes constant acceleration.

2 Newton’s Second Law Net forces can be determined by F = ma
Or, net force is the product of mass (kg) and acceleration (m/s2) As such, force is measured in Newton’s 1 N = 1 kg · m/s2

3 F = ma Practice Problems
1. What is the force required to move a 2,000 kg car with an acceleration of 2 m/s/s? 2. What is the acceleration of a 4,000 kg car pushed with a force of 12,000 N? 3. What is the mass of a car pushed with 19,000 N that accelerates at 10 m/s/s? 4. How much force is required to bring a 25.9 g model rocket from rest to 386 m/s over a course of 1.90 s?
