Ch.10, Sec.2 – The Louisiana Purchase and Exploration Napoleon and New Orleans Napoleon and New Orleans - after losing the French & Indian War, France turned over the Louisiana Territory to Spain - the fight for New Orleans almost caused a war between the United States & Spain - in 1800, Spain sent the Louisiana Territory back to France in a secret treaty

Ch.10, Sec.2 – The Louisiana Purchase and Exploration - to avoid war, Jefferson asked Napoleon Bonaparte if he would be willing to sell New Orleans - Jefferson received a surprising response: “did the U.S. want to purchase the entire Louisiana Territory?” Napoleon Bonaparte

Ch.10, Sec.2 – The Louisiana Purchase and Exploration The Louisiana Purchase The Louisiana Purchase - Napoleon turned the Louisiana Territory over for a couple reasons: 1. America was determined to keep the New Orleans port open 2. the Haitian revolt in Hispaniola by Toussaint L’Ouverture weakened Napoleon’s desire for a colony in America 3. France needed the money to fund their war with England - Jefferson obtained the Louisiana Purchase for $15,000,000 on April 30, 1803, doubling the size of the United States!!!

Ch.10, Sec.2 – The Louisiana Purchase and Exploration Lewis and Clark Explore Lewis and Clark Explore - after the Louisiana Purchase, Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to conduct an expedition to explore the new territory - the 40 man expedition came to be known as the Lewis and Clark expedition or the “Corps of Discovery” - Clark’s slave, York, became very popular with the Native-Americans for his hunting skills York

Ch.10, Sec.2 – The Louisiana Purchase and Exploration

Up the Missouri River Up the Missouri River - Jefferson instructed the expedition to record the landscape, plants, animals, and establish good relations with Natives - they left in May of 1804 and by October had reached the Mandan Indian villages in North Dakota - they spent the Winter with the Mandan people and French fur trappers

Ch.10, Sec.2 – The Louisiana Purchase and Exploration - in the Spring of 1805, the expedition left the village with a French trapper, his wife Sacagawea, and their baby - Sacagawea was a Shoshone woman with great geographical knowledge & language skill - she was born in Idaho, but was taken prisoner by the Mandan tribe in a battle with the Shoshone in 1800 and relocated to North Dakota

Ch.10, Sec.2 – The Louisiana Purchase and Exploration

On to the Pacific Ocean On to the Pacific Ocean - the expedition had to walk around the 10-mile long Great Falls in Montana - once completed, they made their way onto Shoshone lands in Idaho - in November of 1805, the expedition finally reached the Pacific Ocean!

Ch.10, Sec.2 – The Louisiana Purchase and Exploration Pike’s Expedition Pike’s Expedition - with Lewis & Clark exploring the northern territory of the Louisiana Territory, Jefferson asked Zebulon Pike to explore the southern portion along the Arkansas and Red Rivers - Pike traveled all the way to the Rockies (Pike’s Peak in Colorado is named after him) - the expedition eventually traveled to the Rio Grande River and was arrested by Spanish troops & released in 1807 Zebulon Pike
