2nd largest port after New York; half of all American trade passed thru New Orleans Was controlled by France who became an empire after Napoleon Jefferson asks France to sell New Orleans, but France rejects because Napoleon wanted to expand his empire to America Later, Napoleon changes his mind and decides to defeat the British first; offers U.S the entire sale of Louisiana Territory

Louisiana Purchase U.S finally buys the territory of 530 million acres for $15 million (only 2.8 cents per acre) Jefferson thought the Constitution did not give the president the right to buy land and wanted to ask Congress for permission But he feared that Napoleon would change his mind – ends up buying the land Jefferson extended his power beyond the Constitution

3 II. Louisiana Purchase Lewis & Clark Expedition
Meriwether Lewis = secretary of Jefferson William Clark = fought during Indian War, was not educated but very good outdoors Goal: careful study on geology, botany, zoology + gather info on natives

5 II. Louisiana Purchase Congress approves the expedition of $2,500; in the end, the trip costs $39,000 Lewis & Clark both receive 1,600 acres of land each

7 II. Louisiana Purchase The 29 men team meet French fur trapper (Charbonneau) in North Dakota and he joins the expedition His wife Sacagawea is a Shoshone Indian The expedition receives much help from Shoshone Indians – 30 horses + Sacagawea guides the team & interprets for them

Discovered over 200 plants animals Brings interest about Western frontiers

10 Pike Expedition 2nd expedition led by Zebulon Pike (1805)
Explores the Colorado Rockies & Rio Grande During his second trip to Arkansas River he was captured by the Spanish. He was later released.

11 III. Troubles for Growing Nation
Jefferson is re-elected as president New Yorker George Clinton is his new vice-president Aaron Burr (grandson of Jonathan Edwards) is dropped from vice-presidency because of his betrayal during election of 1800 Burr is exiled and his political life is over
