Presentation of Chapters 12 & 13 Chapter 1: e-Learning: Promise and Pitfalls Chapter 14: Applying the Guidelines November 27, 2005 Professor Paul Kim By Piya Sorcar

Chapter 1: e-Learning: Promise and Pitfalls E-Learning: According to Clark & Mayer, training delivered on a computer (including CD Rom, Internet, or intranet) that is designed to support individual learning or organizational performance goals “e” in e-learning refers to the “how” “learning” refers to the “what” and “why” Reason Behind the Naming: DEFINITIONS:

Chapter 1: e-Learning: Promise and Pitfalls Training Goals:Environmental Differences: Learner Differences: Factors that Affect E-Learning: The course designer should design a course based on the outcome the learner should receive. The designer should know their learner audience and create a program to specifically target them One size does not fit all -one has to be quite familiar with the learning environment before designing a course.

Chapter 14: Applying the Guidelines Future of e-learning Prediction 1: e-learning for Job Payoff Course designers will be more focused on designing materials based on the outcome desired Problem centered designs (job-realistic) More creativity in blending computer technology with delivery of media

Chapter 14: Applying the Guidelines Future of e-learning Prediction 2: e-Learning to Build Problem-Solving Skills Incorporate advanced technologies to nurture retention and motivation (simulations, new media) Learners will be able to compare their cognitive maps to expert ones Innovations in collaborative learning and improving social interaction will be more prominent
