Career and GCSE Overview Mr Dominic Kidman Head of Careers

Year 10 into Year 11  Very short academic year – 8 months (including holidays)  Pressure builds immediately on return from Summer Holiday  Exams and coursework deadlines are an on-going feature of the year

Determine VI th form  VI th Form colleges set specific entry criteria  Majority of courses beyond GCSE will stipulate a minimum level of attainment in certain subjects  C grade in English and Mathematics a minimum requirement in an overwhelming amount of F.E. establishments for vast majority of age applicable courses

Determine college course  Level 1 - equivalent to D-G GCSE  Essentially pre GCSE  Level 2 - equivalent to A*-C GCSE  GCSE equivalent  Level 3 – beyond GCSE  A Level equivalent

Determine career  Entering at Level 1 or 2 does raise question marks for prospective employers  Whole array of courses and careers have subject-specific entry requirements  Social work – Minimum C in English and Mathematics  Teaching – Minimum C in English and Mathematics  Nursing – Minimum C in English and Mathematics  RAF (Logistics) – Minimum C in English and Mathematics  British Army – Minimum C in English and Mathematics to gain promotion beyond regular army

Apprenticeships  Can lead to a degree, but no fees and working/earning while studying  Your FROG page has latest apprenticeship vacancies which are updated every week. OR  Log on to apprenticeships.org.uk  Click ‘search for vacancies’, start searching and register. You can search using keywords, job role or postcode.

What is already in place  Career interviews currently in progress  This is a two way relationship – you get out what you put in in terms of pre interview preparation!  Further intervention scheduled for year 11  Regular updates of apprenticeships and generic career news appear in St. Peter’s monthly newsletter  Dedicated Apprenticeship Liaison in residence (Mrs Stajka)

Beyond Further Education  Considering the following:  Economy  Global marketplace  Employers  Budget for further and higher education  Increasing cost of living  Differentiation becomes a fundamental requirement to get ahead and be empowered

An unfortunate case….
