Generic Conventions Little Red Riding Hood

Generic Conventions Generic conventions influence: Setting Characterisation Plot This Presentation will focus on Setting as the main effect of genre in texts is on setting. This presentation will show you that one story can be percieved differently if it were told in a different genre. Although the plot does not change, your attitude toward the story might.

Children’s Little Red Riding Hood

Setting - Children What does this picture say about the PHYSICAL setting? The tone and atmosphere is a happy and joyful one. The wolf looks cute and friendly as does the scenery, animals and weather.

Setting - Children What does this picture say about the CULTURAL setting? It is more civilized than barbaric. It is quite traditional and hides the nasty side of life. The Charatcers ‘way of life’ seems carefree and innocent from this picture.

Setting - Children What does this picture say about the SOCIAL/MORAL setting? Little Red Riding Hood is the main focus of the picture so she would seem to be in possession of power, above all other characters.

Setting - Children What does this picture say about the HISTORICAL setting? Little Red Riding Hood appears to be quite young and looking at her clothing, it would be accurate to assume that this image is set a while in the past. Also from the cottage in the background which is not common scenery, particularly in Australia today.

Horror Little Red Riding Hood

Setting - Horror What does this picture say about the PHYSICAL setting? The tone and atmosphere is a grim and fearsome one as there seems to be a cemetery behind her. The scenery is dark and bleak with a misty hue to signify mystery or “lurking”. There is no light on Little Red Riding Hood to suggest safety or happiness for her.

Setting - Horror What does this picture say about the CULTURAL setting? It is more barbaric than civilized. It has a more modern feel and brings into light the darker more evil side of life. The Characters ‘way of life’ seems scared and alone from this picture.

Setting - Horror What does this picture say about the SOCIAL/MORAL setting? In this picture, Little Red Riding Hood appears to be at the mercy of the forest that is bearing down on her. She is shadowed by the trees implying that evil will come out of it. She does not have power in this image, but it is the forest with all the power.

Setting - Horror What does this picture say about the HISTORICAL setting? Although this picture appears to be set in the distant past, the horrific themes that the physical setting contribute suggest that it could be a modern adaptation. The clarity in the image would also suggest that this picture is quite modern.

Historical Setting Although this picture appears to be set in the distant past, the horrific themes that the physical setting contribute suggest that it could be a modern adaptation. The clarity in the image would also suggest that this picture is quite modern.

Generic Conventions Effects From looking at these two pictures, it becomes clear that generic conventions have the power to suggest two completely different versions of the same story. Although the plot may be no different in each story, the genre that effects setting can provide many different connotations when discussing stories and narratives.
