Movie starter 1 Woman in Black

Sound: a music box soundtrack starts the scene, making an eerie feel for the audience. There is also ambient sound with the tea pot clinking against the cups Lighting: we can already see that is low key lighting which is used often for Horror films. However with this we can see that light is emitting from somewhere unfortunately we don’t know when yet. Mise-en-scene: by this first shot we can see that it is set in a girls playroom, due to the tea set shown on the scene, the teacups and pots gives the audience the idea that the scene is set in the past because of the style of the props. Editing: The film starts with a cut to this scene, getting straight in the film unlike other films that show text and important names. Cinematography: this shot is a close up, because we can see each of the cups and not one and also see the rest of the background and also see the little girl pour the fake tea into the cups.

Sound: the music is still the same music box soundtrack, however is louder when we see the girls.
Mise-En-Scene: this time the audience can clearly see that the setting is a child’s playroom, with the pushchair and dolls parts in the background. The props in the scene are doll set with small chairs and teacups, pictures, pushchair for a baby doll, small wooden toys, this shows the audience the era of the scene with the old type toys. Costume hair and makeup also suggest that the era is either Victorian or Elizabethan because of the dresses of the little girls and the accessories in their hair. Lighting: the lighting is still low key however this time we can see where to source of lighting is coming from in the room (right) Editing: still the same as before with cross cutting scenes and keeping it to the point, with the era you could consider that this is a non-continuity editing however the audience could think that the whole film is based in this era. The first couple of shots where fast paced editing to show the audience (in different angles) what is going on. Cinematography: unlike the couple of shots this one is the first one that is a long shot, showing the whole room and the characters I the scene/shot Characters: 3 Victorian girls playing dolls, looking happy and playing.

Mise-En-Scene: the setting just suggests that the family are not of high society due to the dirtiness of the pots and pans and the colour of the walls. Costumes allow the audience to see what the children’s class is. The children’s facial expressions show the audience that they’re having fun with one another. Sound: the sound is still the same music box soundtrack but has become more eerie than before the movie started. Lighting: the lighting is still low key however this time we can see where to source of lighting is coming from in the room (facing towards the girls). Editing: still the same as before with cross cutting scenes and keeping it to the point, showing the audience the characters close up and the situation they are in. Cinematography: medium long shot, allowing the audience to see the background and the characters in the scene clearly Characters: 2 of the 3 girls, showing the way that they are facing and more about the character’s lives

Sound: there’s a huge shift I the atmosphere of the music, it becomes lower and more eerie at this point which makes the audience wonder what the girls have seen this could be called as sound motif. Lighting: this is the first time we see where the light source is (the windows) however with the low key lighting, it emits from one side of the room, which is the side they’re looking at. Mise-En-Scene: You can see more of the room now, aka the bed, due to there only being one we can assume that the family aren't rich if all the girls have to share one bed. The positioning of characters suggest that this family are close and don’t mind hanging out together. Editing: this shot is like the one before with slow paced editing until the other shots before. This allows the audience to understand that this is a key moment unlike the ones before. Cinematography: this is a LS like the one before, this gives the audience the sense of caution when the girls look over, wondering what is going on.

Sound: sound change to a lower pitch and becomes louder when the girls look off camera to the window, this allows the audience to feel worried and scared about what’s going to happen. Lighting: still low key lighting with the source of light, this time the girls look over to it which could symbolize heaven and the girl’s pre-warned death Mise-En-Scene: the same shot as clip too the only changes are the girls position, however we can see more props over the right side, which suggests that the key focus is that side of the room Editing: The shift in effect from the music makes this shot seem more creepy than the one before. This is due to the audience’s perception of the situation. Cinematography: This one is a LS like the one before, giving the audience the understanding that this is a key moment unlike the tea party and the smiling faces

Sound: the eeriness of the non-diegetic sound track continues during this shot foreshadows what the girls are about to do (jump out the window) Lighting: the windows are the key light source in this scene, however, the rest of the room is low key lighting, like the shots before. Mise-En-Scene: Now that we can see outside slightly, you can see that the room is on the second floor due to the outline of the tree seen. The props allow the audience to see the status of the girls and the time era this scene is set in. Editing: like the other shots it cuts from one scene to the next. This allows the audience to focus on the story line rather than the fanciness of the editing Cinematography: zoom in from a MLS to a CU this shows the audience the importance of the windows that the girls are looking at.

Sound: diegetic sound of the china dolls and cups breaking under their feet, the soundtrack has a different effect on the audience and a creating a different atmosphere for the audience. Lighting: low key lighting with the girls walking to the source of light (window) Mise-En-Scene: with costume we can how see more of the children’s dresses and shoes which allows the audience to see the status of the children and the era of the movie. The props shown in the first shot are then broken which could suggest their determination to go to the window. Editing: fast pace editing, none of the shots are more than a second long for these couple of shots. Cuts are in-between the shots Cinematography: all of the face editing shots are either CU or MCU to allow the audience to see what is going on with the children.

Sound: the soundtrack comes to an abrupt stop just as the girls are about to jump, this creates suspense for the audience Lighting: low key lighting, when the girls jump the lighting darkens, however the windows give the whole room light. Mise-En-Scene: With costume we can how see more of the children’s dresses and shoes which allows the audience to see the status of the children and the era of the movie. Editing: when the girls jump there is slow motion editing to allow the audience to see the suspense of the jump. Cinematography: LS shot too allow the audience to see that all 3 girls jump out the window, not only one of them.

Sound: diegetic sound of a woman screaming ‘no. my babies
Sound: diegetic sound of a woman screaming ‘no! my babies!’ which shows the audience that the children did in fact die. The soundtrack, fades back in slightly with the zoom out Lighting: The room has lightened up slightly allowing the darkness of the woman in black to be more creepy than the rest of the room. Mise-En-Scene: The woman in black’s costume suggests that this is in fact her character as well as her hiding her face could suggest she is the villain and/or she has been at a funeral Editing: fade out to white just as the woman in black is seen in camera which allows the audience to see the eeriness of her character Cinematography: over the shoulder shot to see the back of the woman in black this allows the audience to see one of the conventions of the film (possession)
