 Store bought laundry detergent is not only expensive but full of chemicals.  Cost effective  Know exactly what you are washing your clothes in.

 Combine grated bar soap, water, washing soda, and borax.  Heat until well combined  Let sit for 24 hours Recipe by David Fisher about.com

 Stain nine white towels, three each of pureed carrots, dirt, and pureed prunes.  Wash first set with just water and set as control group.  Wash second set with 1/8 cup of Tide.  Wash third set with 1/8 cup of homemade laundry detergent.

 Control group as expected, water is not a great stain remover.  Tide was a great stain remover for dirt and prunes, but not carrots.  Homemade laundry detergent was a good stain remover for dirt, but left a small amount of prune, and a large amount of the carrot stain.

 Use different store bought detergents  Wash on different cycles  Use different proportions of ingredients  Try different stains

 Carrots stain everything  Even though the homemade laundry detergent wasn’t as effective at removing stains as Tide, it would be a great detergent to use on lightly soiled loads.  Cost effective
