Faculty Athletics Representative Makes Regular Reports to Faculty Senate An efficient link between the faculty athletics representative and the faculty senate is useful in assuring the faculty of accurate and timely information regarding the athletics program. Whether appointed by the chief executive officer or elected directly by the faculty, the faculty athletics representative commonly serves as a conduit of information to and from the faculty and the athletics program. It is common for the faculty athletics representative to report periodically to the faculty senate regarding the operation of the athletics program.

Department of Athletics Mission Statement The Coastal Carolina University Department of Athletics provides our student-athletes the preparation and opportunities to reach their potential as responsible and productive citizens through academic, athletic and personal success.

Department of Athletics Philosophy The Coastal Carolina University Department of Athletics promotes success in collegiate athletics without compromising excellence in academics or compliance. Department staff and coaches encourage student-athletes to maintain a balance between athletics, academics and the social aspects of the collegiate experience. Athletic participation has the ability to provide an added dimension to the overall college experience of a student and to benefit the student in their personal and professional challenges.

The report is based on two factors: (1) eligibility/progress toward graduation and (2) retention. Calculations Total points earned by team (SA with institutional financial aid) / total points possible. Top Score = 1,000. Four-year average for multi year rate

NCAA Division I Academic Reforms: Academic Progress Rate (APR) During each regular academic term (a semester) of full time enrollment a student-athlete can earn two points towards his/her team’s APR score. 1.A student athlete will receive 1 point if, at the end of the semester, he/she is academically eligible to compete in the following regular academic term or has graduated. 2.A student-athlete can earn 1 point if he/she returns to the institution (retained) as a full-time student in the next regular academic term or graduates.

Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Post- Season Play Beginning with championships, teams must earn a minimum 900 four-year APR or a 930 average over the most recent two years to be eligible to participate. For championships, teams must earn a 930 four-year average APR or a 940 average over the most recent two years to participate in championships. CCU Athletics Highlights, 2013 – of 18 teams advanced to NCAA post-season play. 8 teams won Big South Championships (tournament or regular season) and one Divisional Championship win. 6 student-athletes earn All-American status. 12 Big South Player/Freshman of Year honors. 126 All-Big South Honorees. 10 of 18 teams (55%) finished #1 or #2 in the Big South Conference standings. 160 former student-athletes named to Big South All- Decade Teams. Further, 13 Coaches recognized as Coach of the Decade. Performed over 3,200 hours of community service.

CCU Athletics Highlights, 2013 – 2014 Men’s Basketball in NCAA Tournament for first time since Men’s Football advances to Quarterfinals in NCAA Football Championship Series Playoffs. Lorenzo Taliaferro named Big South Male Athlete of the Year. Men’s Soccer advances to Sweet 16 in NCAA Tournament. Philippe Tsangarides qualifies for Men’s Tennis Singles. Andrew Dorn and Andrew Wheeler earn at-large bids to NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. Reggie Nelson qualified for Nationals in the High Jump.

CCU Athletics Highlights, 2013 – 2014 Triple Crown: The Chanticleer women’s cross country and track & field programs achieved one of the more elusive feats in intercollegiate athletics by winning titles in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. Six All-Americans: Pedro Ribeiro (Soccer); Lorenzo Taliaferro, Quinn Backus, Jamie Cheatwood, Devin Brown (Football); and Reggie Nelson (Track & Field). Six Athletes Drafted by Professional Franchises: Lorenzo Taliaferro, Matt Hazel (Football); Pedro Ribeiro (Soccer); Colin Herring, Ben Smith, and Tyler Herb (Baseball).

TD Bank and Coastal Carolina University TD Bank’s $5 million donation will be used to strengthen CCU’s sustainability initiatives, support athletic programs, and provide endowed scholarships and summer school academic support.

Alan Connie Retires after 28 Years Coach Alan Connie started the cross country program in 1986 and led the charge to add the outdoor track & field program in 1994 and the indoor program in His women’s cross country and track & field programs won a combined 28 Big South titles.
