Placement Sites Nutrition Care Sites: VGH UBCH GF Strong Rehab Centre Richmond Hospital Lion’s Gate Hospital BC Women’s Health Centre Population and Public Health Sites: Vancouver/Richmond/ North Shore Management Sites: VGH UBCH Lion’s Gate GF Strong Rehab Centre Richmond Hospital Minoru Residence Lions Manor Dogwood Lodge George Pearson Centre Holy Family **Interns can expect to be placed at 2-3 different nutrition care sites and 2-3 different management sites.

Program Highlights Vancouver – Acute Services (VGH, GF Strong, UBCH)— 39 FTE of dietitians VGH: 900 acute care beds, 160 residential care beds, ambulatory care clinics; 50 dietitians Specialized and Tertiary Care Major Provincial Referral Centre for: –Neurosciences, Lung and Liver Transplant, Bone Marrow Transplant, Spinal Cord Injury, Burns and Trauma Unit, Adult Metabolic Clinic

Program Highlights Wide range of interesting patients means wide range of interesting experiences  Individuals who live and work in Vancouver including business people and downtown residents  Disadvantaged populations including the poor and homeless  Patients from throughout B.C. for specialized services such as cardiac, renal, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, eating disorders, adult cystic fibrosis  Visitors to Vancouver

Program Highlights Over 50 dietitians who work in a variety of interesting positions

Nutrition Care 1 Learning the basics of clinical nutrition in: –Elder Care Residential care sites –Medicine at St Paul’s Hospital or Mt St Joseph Hospital

Nutrition Care 2 Cardiac GI surgery Diabetes Teaching and Treatment Centre Renal programs including chronic renal failure, dialysis and transplant HIV Eating disorders

Nutrition Care 3 Healthy Heart Program Outpatient dietitian services Nutrition support including home enteral nutrition

Nutrition Care 4 Relief in both inpatient and outpatient areas of either MSJH or St. Paul’s Hospital

54 Intern Comments I think it is important for interns to know that the North is a great opportunity to gain a broad perspective of a small town dietitian’s job. They have a lot of autonomy and flexibility with their work and make a lot of great things happen. The Northern Health dietitians are wonderful and very knowledgeable, I have met so many wonderful people along the way that it is hard to leave each community, but know I have built some amazing friendships that I hope to keep in contact with for years to come. People just need to be a bit adventurous and leave their comfort zone to experience what great things life has to offer. Traveling around to the different towns gives you an idea of what’s available around the north and which communities you might want to work in. You may be surprised and end up really liking a town that you have never been before.
