2 History The UVA school of medicine was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1825, but it wasn’t until 1901 that the first UVA hospital was opened. Since then multiple additions have been made to the UVA facilities, expanding the patient capacity, as well as the services offered. In 1984, the current UVA hospital (referred to as the “new hospital”) was opened. Today the UVA health system works to offer services that exceed the expectations of patients, while upholding the four core values of respect, integrity, stewardship, and excellence. The UVA health system is committed to education through the UVA School of Medicine and School of Nursing, and is one of the leading programs in research and clinical trials.
