David & Bathsheba (2 Sam. 11) This event is really the first major failure in David’s life – there are no mitigating circumstances here! What is the spiritual state of Israel at this point?  2 Sam. 6:16-19 – The restoration of the Ark of the Covenant  2 Sam. 7:15 – “…your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.”  2 Sam. 8:14 – “…the L ORD gave victory to David wherever he went.”  2 Sam. 8:15 – “David administered justice and equity to all his people. “

David & Bathsheba (2 Sam. 11)  The Ark of the Covenant (ie – the presence of the Lord) has been brought into the geographic and spiritual center of the nation  David has proven himself as: A good king A strong leader Someone concerned with the Lord’s will  God has established/fortified/built up David’s house.  Enemies are falling right & left to David’s army.  The people are feeling the blessings of David’s success as well!

David & Bathsheba (2 Sam. 11) What mistakes does David make in this scenario?  Adultery (11:4; Ex. 20:14)  Tries to cover the sin (11:6  Distracts his general (11:6  Jeopardizes Joab’s battle plan (11:16  Murder (11:15-17) of Uriah AND other men too! (Ex. 20:13)  Coveted (11:2-5; Ex. 20:17)  Puts Joab in a “tight spot”  Despised the word of the Lord (12:9; Despise = to regard as worthless, negligible, or distasteful)  Does not realize/care about his sins (11:25-27)

David & Bathsheba (2 Sam. 11) Who is affected by David’s sins/lack of judgment?  Uriah – killed  Bathsheba – commits adultery; has to keep the secret from her husband; has to keep the entire event secret for fear of reprisal/scandal  David & Bathsheba’s child – dies  Joab – forced to choose between the battle and the king’s orders  David’s army – many of them die as well; have to deal with the weight of losing the battle  Nathan – has to confront the king and convict him of wrong- doing  Elders & servants in David’s household – they are witness to these events and have to keep them hushed up and bear the “awkwardness” of the situation  Solomon – will grow up with this knowledge of his parents’ sins

David & Bathsheba (2 Sam. 11) What are the repercussions of David’s sin?  Death of the child.  Guilt of the sins (murder, adultery, etc.)  Much of the kingdom would be taken from David’s house. Division Civil War Eventual captivity
