Independence School District Child and Family Learning Center (CFLC) History:  1979: Started Head Start Services  1981: ISD piloted new program called P.A.T.  1987: Independences implements Dr Ed Zigler’s Schools of the 21 st Century through a grant from the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation  1988: Two schools began pre-school, before and after care, and flip-flop (AM/PM) Kindergarten  1990: ISD began Family Literacy (Even Start)  1995: Partners with Local Investment Commission to create Caring Communities

Independence School District  1997: ISD pilots Head Start services into five schools  1998: 73% of voters approve local bond to build early childhood centers  1999: Early Head Start Collaboration begins  2003: First in State to offer Comprehensive Head Start Services to all Pre-K Students School Based  2003 – 2005: ISD receives three 21CCLC awards  2005: Partnership with Department of Social Services to launch a Child Welfare Initiative
