HONDURAS THE MILLION MEAL PROJECT

Honduras is the 3 rd poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. This project brings Rotary Clubs in U.S.A. and Honduras together with Hunger Plus, Inc. (a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to feeding the hungry). BACKGROUND

The primary focus is to provide 1,000,000 servings of rice and beans to the starving people in Honduras. John Kenny and the Rotary Action Group on Hunger and Malnutrition have identified hunger (a major world problem) as a priority for Rotary. The success of this program can be used as a model for projects in other areas around the world; to help alleviate hunger. They need our help!

A typical tent house – at the dump. A family’s home. People so needy that they fight buzzards for food. A child searching for food at the dump.

WHAT WE PROPOSE Rotary Clubs/Districts in the U.S.A. and Honduras can jointly raise funds & pool resources for the success of this project. Hunger Plus, Inc. will act as facilitator of the project. The funds raised will be used towards the purchase of 44,000 lbs of rice and 44,000 lbs of beans (food staples in Honduras) that will be shipped to Honduras. The beans and rice will be packed in 5 lb bags labeled with Rotary and Hunger Plus, Inc. logos. The Club Rotario de Tegucigalpa will be the lead in the Honduras activities. The 7 Rotary Clubs in the Tegucigalpa area will identify what areas the project needs to serve. A day will be selected and all the Clubs will get together to distribute the rice and beans. Distribution will be a media event. Rotary and Hunger Plus will be highlighted. Rotary leadership is encouraged to participate in food distribution.
