The APOSTLES FILLED with the HOLY SPIRIT SPEAK in other LANGUAGES Chapter 2:1-13; The APOSTLES FILLED with the HOLY SPIRIT SPEAK in other LANGUAGES

One of them, Judas Iscariot had betrayed him and committed suicide. Jesus had chosen twelve apostles to represent Him and His New Covenant on earth. One of them, Judas Iscariot had betrayed him and committed suicide. Jesus had continued appearing to the remaining apostles and teaching them for forty days after His resurrection. Then He ascended to heaven.

The Promised Power Ten days before this Pentecost Day, on the day He ascended, He had commanded His apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the “Power from on High,” or the baptism with the Holy Spirit. They needed this power so they could perform the miraculous signs that confirmed the oral message and so they could lay their hands on others and give them the miraculous power also (Acts 6:6-8; 8:8-19).

A Gap in the Chronology When the 120 met with the apostles in the upper room to appoint a twelfth apostle to take Judas’ place, it was on one of the ten days between the ascension and the Day of Pentecost. Now it is on a later day, on the Pentecost Day, that the apostles were all together in one place and the Holy Spirit comes upon them. The text does not identify the place.

Acts 2:1-4 2:1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

What was Pentecost (Vs 2:1)? Discussion Question: What was Pentecost (Vs 2:1)?

feast of Weeks or feast of Harvest Chapter 2:1; PENTECOST also called feast of Weeks or feast of Harvest One of Three feasts everyone present Exodus 23:14-17, Deuteronomy 16:16; Passover Leviticus 23:5-6; Pentecost Leviticus 23:15-17; Tabernacles Leviticus 23:34;

It was the fiftieth day after the Passover. Leviticus 23:15-16;. The name “Pentecost,” was from the Greek language and it means “Fiftieth.” It was the fiftieth day after the Passover. Leviticus 23:15-16;. The Jews had called it the “Feast of Weeks,” “Harvest Festival” and the “Festival of the First Fruits.” It began on the Sunday the 1st day after the Sabbath which is a Saturday or 7th day, 7 weeks or 49 days after the Passover

Scripture Leviticus 23:16 “Count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the LORD” Numbers 28:26 “`On the day of firstfruits, when you present to the LORD an offering of new grain during the Feast of Weeks, hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.”

The First Fruits The Jews who accepted the gospel on this great day became the first fruits to God of His new Creation. I’m sure this was another reason that this particular day was chosen by Jesus as the best day for His Kingdom to come. The Jews were the first fruits of all Christians. But there is a sense in which all Christians are the first fruits to God of Mankind (James 1:18).

Jews from all over the world would be gathered in Jerusalem and God CHOSE this day to speak about the victory of His Son Jesus and bring the church into being. As the day when the preaching of the gospel reaped a great harvest of souls from among the Jews who were there that day, it was an appropriate time.

Mark 16:9; Christ’s resurrection Chapter 2:1; There are a number of things identified in the New Testament with the Sunday or 1st day Mark 16:9; Christ’s resurrection Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2; Christians gather together to worship God, share in the Lords supper and give of their means.

Chapter 2:1; There are a number of things identified in the New Testament with the Sunday or 1st day Revelation 1:6-9; John received his vision of the revelation on the 1st day of the week - the Lords Day

When the day was FULLY come Chapter 2:1; PENTECOST When the day was FULLY come

In verse 15 the NIV says 9:00 in the morning In verse 15 the NIV says 9:00 in the morning. The KJV says the third hour. The Jews measured time from daylight (i.e. 6:00 AM) and thus the third hour after 6:00 AM was 9:00.

2:1; They the Apostles with one accord in one place No one except the apostles was promised the baptism with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:1-5). If we look carefully at the text we will see that the pronoun “they” in chapter 2. verse 1 refers to the noun “apostles” in the last sentence of the first chapter. It was the apostles, then, who were all together in one place when the Holy Spirit came upon them.

2:1; WAS IT ONLY THE TWELVE? The Promise is for the Twelve (Matthew 26:20; Mark 14:17; Luke 22:14) The Commission is for the Twelve (Matthew 28:16) The Orders are for the Twelve (Acts 1:2) Those speaking are Galilean (Acts 2:7) The Stand is by the Twelve (Acts 2:14)

2:1; WAS IT ONLY THE TWELVE? The Wonders and Signs are by the Twelve (Acts 2:43, 4:33; 5:12; 2 Corinthians 12:12) The Persecution belongs to the Twelve (Acts 5:18, 29, 40) The Ordination belongs to the Twelve (Acts 6:6)

2v2; A SOUND like the sound of a mighty wind NOT a wind but a sound like a mighty wind With the coming of the Holy Spirit came a sound like the blowing of a mighty wind. It was not actually a wind that made the sound. It was what we would today call a sound effect. But it got the attention of the crowds. They ran to the location where the sound seemed to be coming from. There they saw the twelve apostles, who had been sitting and were now standing together.

The Sight like fire NOT a FIRE but LIKE a fire What the crowd saw when they ran to the place where the twelve apostles were standing was something that looked like flames coming from the top of the head, and possibly the shoulders, of each of the twelve apostles. God had used a similar sign to get Moses’ attention at Horeb almost two thousand years before.

They the Apostles were FILLED with MIRACULOUS POWER 2v4; When this happened They the Apostles were FILLED with MIRACULOUS POWER and began to SPEAK in other LANGUAGES as the Holy Spirit enabled them

MANIFESTATION OF THE SPIRIT AUDIBLE. Sounded like a violent wind 2:3-4; MANIFESTATION OF THE SPIRIT AUDIBLE. Sounded like a violent wind VISIBLE. What looked like fire descended, divided, and designated. INTERNAL. Inspiration and Courage EXTERNAL. Speaking in languages they had not learned.

This fulfilled what Jesus had promised JOHN 14:16-17 2v4; This fulfilled what Jesus had promised JOHN 14:16-17 "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you.

This fulfilled what Jesus had promised 2v4; This fulfilled what Jesus had promised Acts 1:2-4; Luke 24:49; that the Apostles would receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit Acts 1:8; the Apostles would receive POWER when the Holy Spirit came upon them and THEY would be Christ’s witnesses

This fulfilled what Jesus had promised 2v4; This fulfilled what Jesus had promised Acts 2:7; Those that spoke were GALILLEANS in 1:11 the Apostles are described as the men of Galilee Acts 2:14; Peter stood up with the other Apostles and preached

This fulfilled what Jesus had promised 2v4; This fulfilled what Jesus had promised Acts 2:37; Those who HEARD asked Peter the other Apostles what they must do about their sinful condition. Acts 2:42; Those who had responded to the preaching the first converts CONTINUED in the APOSTLES TEACHING

This fulfilled what Jesus had promised 2v4; This fulfilled what Jesus had promised Acts 2:43; Many wonders and signs were done through the Apostles. Acts 3:6-7; The lame man was healed miraculously by the APOSTLE Peter

2v4; Acts 4:33; The Apostles gave WITNESS to resurrection of Jesus with GREAT POWER Acts 5:12; Through the hands of the APOSTLES many SIGNS and WONDERS were done

When you consider the context of all these passages 2v4; When you consider the context of all these passages They seem to overwhelmingly indicate that in this case it was the Apostles who were baptised with the Holy Spirit

Because it seems to be a problem question for some as to who ought 2v4; Because it seems to be a problem question for some as to who ought to be baptised with the Holy Spirit. Let us remember some other thoughts about this at this time

2v4; Some thoughts on baptism with or in the Holy Spirit? It was a PROMISE NOT a COMMAND Luke 24:49; Acts 1:5-8; 2:33; It was ADMINSTERED or GIVEN only by CHRIST not man Matthew 3:11; Acts 2:22-33;

2v4; Some thoughts on baptism with or in the Holy Spirit? The PURPOSE was NOT to give FORGIVENESS OF SINS The PURPOSE was To EMPOWER the Apostles in the work of REVEALING and CONFIRMING the WORD of God John 16:13; Acts 1:8; 2:4;

2v4; Some thoughts on baptism with or in the Holy Spirit? It happened ONLY ONCE to the twelve Apostles When the SPIRIT was POURED OUT the SPIRIT came with POWER at PENTECOST Acts Ch 2:1-4;

Some thoughts on baptism with or in the Holy Spirit? 2v4; Some thoughts on baptism with or in the Holy Spirit? The PROMISE was described in LIMITED terms to the Apostles of Christ Acts 1:2,3,4,26; 2:1-4;

The Holy Spirit being POURED out on the Apostles –called the “BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT” Jesus had to go before the Spirit could come into the world in this special way. Imagine an empty swimming pool with 12 men standing in the deep end and suddenly a cascade of water, like a waterfall pours into the pool and the apostles are standing under the cascade

The Holy Spirit does NOT need to be POURED OUT again and again From that time on the HOLY SPIRIT like a river of water has been made available to every Christian. When you are obedient to Christ it is like jumping in the swimming pool to receive the HOLY SPIRIT who was poured out on the Apostles. The Holy Spirit does NOT need to be POURED OUT again and again

Special delivery! HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Spirit POURS out of the Lorry and the Apostles take it to the salvation shop to make it available to others SALVAT ION SHOP Please REMEMBER the HOLY SPIRIT is a PERSON NOT a THING Special delivery! HOLY SPIRIT

From that time till now people can listen to the Apostles teaching and in obedience to what is taught can receive forgiveness and the Holy Spirit will come and dwell in them as Peter said in Acts 2:38; SALVATION SHOP Sinner who repents Apostles teaching

Baptism of the Holy Spirit? 2v4; CONTRAST Baptism of the Holy Spirit? Gift of POWER Water Baptism

Baptism of the Holy Spirit? It happened ONLY ONCE 2v4; CONTRAST Baptism of the Holy Spirit? It happened ONLY ONCE POURED OUT ON PENTECOST

The Power was for the apostles and for whom the Spirit wills 2v4; CONTRAST Gift of POWER The Power was for the apostles and for whom the Spirit wills Mark 9:1; Acts 6: Acts 10:1-10; 1Corinthians 12:1; 2 Corinthians 12:1-5;

Water Baptism is a command of God 2v4; CONTRAST Water Baptism Water Baptism is a command of God Matthew 28:19;. Acts 2:38; 10:48; 22:16;.

Baptism of the Holy Spirit? 2v4; CONTRAST Baptism of the Holy Spirit? H/S Baptism has no name at all- because not performed by man Matthew 3:11;.

Water Baptism is in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit 2v4; CONTRAST Water Baptism Water Baptism is in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit (by the authority of) Matthew 28:19;. Acts 2:38;. 8:14-16;. 22:16;. 1Corinthians 6:11;.

Some times called GIFT most USUALLY DEMONSTRATED in some way as in a 2v4; CONTRAST Gift of POWER Some times called GIFT most USUALLY DEMONSTRATED in some way as in a healing or in speaking a foreign language Different gifts given for different purposes 1Corinthians 12 usually TRANSFERRED by the LAYING ON of the APOSTLES HANDS

Some times called GIFT most USUALLY DEMONSTRATED in some way as in a 2v4; CONTRAST Gift of POWER Some times called GIFT most USUALLY DEMONSTRATED in some way as in a healing or in speaking a foreign language In the case of Cornelius and family Acts 10:44; Gift given DIRECTLY by the HOLY SPIRIT

Baptism of the Holy Spirit? 2v4; CONTRAST - CONCLUSION Baptism of the Holy Spirit? ONE TIME ACT AS THE SPIRIT CAME IN A SPECIAL WAY TO EMPOWER THE APOSTLES WITH SPECIAL ABILITIES – TOTAL RECALL ETC

2v4; CONTRAST - CONCLUSION Water Baptism YOU CAN OBEY THE Lords command to be Baptized with water, and in your act of OBEDIENCE you receive the INDWELLING SPIRIT as a promise of God Acts 2:38; and as YOUR GUARANTEE FROM GOD Ephesians 1:13-14;.

NOTHING you can do to OBTAIN the 2v4; CONTRAST – CONCLUSION Gift of POWER NOTHING you can do to OBTAIN the POWER (miraculous) Acts 8:18;. for that was for a limited period as the Spirit Willed...To confirm the word. Hebrews 2:4;. John 20:31; 1Corinthians 13ff;.

The SAME AS being FILLED with the SPIRIT 2v4; CONTRAST IS Baptism of /in the Holy Spirit? The SAME AS being FILLED with the SPIRIT Ephesians 5:19;

FILLED with the SPIRIT Acts 3:10; all the people FILLED 2v4; CONTRAST being FILLED with the SPIRIT Acts 3:10; all the people FILLED with WONDER and AMAZEMENT Acts 4:8; Peter FILLED with the Spirit PREACHED the WORD

2v4; CONTRAST being FILLED with the SPIRIT Acts 4:31; Those gathered together were FILLED and they spoke the WORD with BOLDNESS Acts 5:17; High priest and the Saduccees were FILLED with JEALOUSY or INDIGNATION

2v4; CONTRAST being FILLED with the SPIRIT Acts 9:17; Paul was to be FILLED with the INDWELLING Holy Spirit at His Baptism Acts 13:9; Paul FILLED with the Holy Spirit spoke to the Proconsol

2v4; CONTRAST being FILLED with the SPIRIT Acts 13:45; Jews seeing the Multitudes were FILLED with (KJV, "ENVY or JEALOUSY.) Ephesians 5:19; Christians FILLED with the Spirit singing inside (making melody in their heart) singing to teach and encourage each other

2v4; CONTRAST being FILLED with the SPIRIT Ephesians 5:19; singing psalms hymns songs Other Illus – Jeremiah Bubble up Seeing an old lady being beaten up, We are FILLED with anger and indignation

being FILLED with the SPIRIT 2v4; being FILLED with the SPIRIT HAS MANY DIFFERENT WAYS OF EXPRESSING ITSELF and need not mean in a miraculous way

Ready to Listen After a time, the loud sound subsides, the flame-like sign continues, then the apostles begin to speak to the crowd in many languages. Translators will probably never translate the word consistently in similar contexts because they want to keep the mysterious concept of “tongues” no one can understand in order to allow those who practice speaking in gibberish and calling it speaking in tongues today can argue the scripturalness of their practice.

“Tongues” Speaking in tongues or speaking a tongue ALWAYS means speaking a real human language as some group of people somewhere on earth commonly speak to each other. The miracle is that the inspired speaker has never learned the language in a normal way by growing up with the language or learning to speak it through the study of the language.

means something of a different kind 2v4; There seems to be a lot of confusion about these TONGUES in this passage OTHER means something of a different kind

Some definitions of the word Tongues used here 2v4; Some definitions of the word Tongues used here VINE’S Dictionary The supernatural gift of speaking in another language without its having been learned

Some definitions of the word Tongues used here 2v4; Some definitions of the word Tongues used here THAYERS Greek English Lexicon The tongue a language used by a particular people in distinction from that of other nations ie in foreign tongues

Some definitions of the word Tongues used here 2v4; Some definitions of the word Tongues used here THAYER continues Acts 2:4, 6-11; to speak with new tongues which the speaker had not learned previously Mark 16:17;

shows that v8 the crowd heard each in his OWN language Conclusion to speak in other tongues is to speak in foreign languages which they had not learned before ALSO THE CONTEXT shows that v8 the crowd heard each in his OWN language we will look at this more closely later
