I’ve been working night and day for this company for over 10 years. I should be running the team, not Sarah. “ Sarah Nundy “My name is Sarah Nundy and I’ve just returned from my maternity leave to a new promotion as the team lead so I’m working as hard as I can to make everyone happy. I’ve got two kids, a husband, a dog, and I’ve just started doing my MBA part-time on weeknights and weekends.” Mark Williams “My name is Mark Williams and I just graduated from college. Giving & Receiving Feedback Meeting Script Giving & Receiving Feedback Script Giving & Receiving Feedback Meeting Script Help Background: The team just finished a big project for which they worked a lot of extra hours. To recognize the team’s efforts, management is offering everyone either a day off or a day’s pay and it’s up to the team to collectively decide on one option. Home John Blackwell “Well the choice is obvious - we could all use a day off. We worked tones of overtime over the last month, which meant I had to cut back on my training.” Mark Williams “Not everyone needs the time off, John, some of us have lots of free time, but it’s the money we need. It must be nice not to have to worry about bills. Kirsten, you just graduated university, you know how it is.” Kirsten Madden “I agree with John, we could all use the time off. Why spend more time here then we need to?” Sarah Nundy “Well, I’m paying for my school courses and daycare so I could really use the extra money. There’s only one person who hasn’t given their input yet. I wonder what it will be?” Close Home

Script: Active Listening Meeting Active Listening Script Script: Active Listening Meeting Help Background: Morale seems to be low lately so the team is meeting to try and figure out what’s going on. Sarah is the first to speak up. Home Sarah Nundy “Ever since the layoffs, I’m really having a problem keeping up with all of this new work that’s been piling up. I now have three people’s work to do plus my own. “ John Blackwell “Just do what you can, Sarah.” Mark Williams “ Things will get better, Sarah. Just hang in there.” Kirsten Madden “It’s always the same story around here, Sarah. Things never change.” Close Home

Script: Your Feedback Option 1 Home Option 2 Option 3 Close Help Giving & Receiving Feedback > Your Feedback Help Script: Your Feedback Option 1 “Everyone has good reasons for either wanting to have the day off or the pay. If I had the day off I’d spend it relaxing but it would also be nice to have a little extra money in my pocket. Option 2 “Everyone has good reasons for wanting either the day off or the pay but we can only pick one. We could vote but then we’re guaranteed to have some disappointment. I know everyone feels strongly about what they’d like to do with the option but is there any chance you could work this out so I don’t have to be the tie breaker?” Option 3 You guys never agree on anything. I’m tired of always having to be the referee. I’m going to stay out of this one and let everyone work this out on their own.” Home Close Home

Script: Team response to option one. Giving & Receiving Feedback > Script: team response to option 1 Script: Team response to option one. Mark Williams I’ve probably got the best reason of all – a huge debt. If I don’t make some more money, I’ll lose my car. Kirsten Madden Yeah, it would be great to get the cash. John Blackwell Come on, admit that the time off is really what you need. You don’t need the money. Sarah Nundy John’s right, time off is really what we need. Home Close Home

Script: Team response to option two. Giving & Receiving Feedback > Script: team response to option 2 Script: Team response to option two. Mark Williams “I know, I know, we never agree on anything. This is really important to me, but I’m willing to hear what everyone has to say and to see if we can come up with a solution. “ Kirsten Madden “I think that’s a good idea. “ John Blackwell “You have to be kidding, right? I’m supposed to negotiate with the two most junior people on the team? I’ll agree to hear them out but I’m not making any promises. Sarah Nundy “Ok, maybe we can come up with some sort of compromise.” Home Close

Script: Team response to option three Giving & Feedback > Script: team response to option 3 Script: Team response to option three Mark Williams “Sure, let’s vote. Kirsten, maybe this time you’ll take my side. “ Kirsten Madden “Whatever.” John Blackwell “When Mark’s been working here more than 10 minutes, I’ll listen to what he has to say. Let’s vote, you know how you should be voting.” Sarah Nundy ““Not another vote! We always spend the rest of day not talking to each other after we’re forced to vote on something like this.” Home Close

Script: Your response Feedback to Response 1 Home Active Listening> Script: Your response Script: Your response Feedback to Response 1 “I hear where everyone is coming from. Everyone has a legitimate reason for wanting either the time off or the pay.” Feedback to Response 2 “Thank you for agreeing to try and talk about this a bit more to see if we can come up with a compromise. I know there aren’t any guarantees we’ll come up with a perfect solution but it’s worth a shot. “ Feedback to Response 3 “Well, fine, vote, but I’m not voting and there’s nothing you can do to make me. For once I wish you guys would stop bickering and fighting at every meeting. Home Close Home

Sarah Nundy “If I sat down and looked through everything I bet I could find a way to cut out some of the duplication that exists and that would definitely make a difference.” Mark Williams “Absolutely, Sarah, I’m certain that if we work together we’ll be able to make some changes that will help you.” Home Close Home

Script: Team response to option three Active listening > Script : team response to option 3 Script: Team response to option three Sarah Nundy “Yes, I’m not sure how I’m going to get through 200 emails a day and still manage to get my real job done.” Kirsten Madden “Tell me about it.” Home Close Home
