Managing Your Literature Search Using Zotero

Outline  Overview of Zotero  Set up Online Sync  Save citations  Use Zotero with Microsoft Word  Review

What is Zotero?  A citation management tool that facilitates collecting and organizing references from databases, websites, catalogs, etc.

Do you use a citation management tool? Which do you use:  EndNote  Mendeley  Papers  RefWorks  Zotero  Something else

Are you a Mac or a PC? Mac PC

Have you begun your lit review?

Zotero Overview Add-on  Runs in Firefox  Compatible with Firefox only

Zotero Overview Standalone  Runs as a separate application  Compatible with Firefox, Chrome & Safari

Zotero Overview Online Sync

Zotero Overview Translator  Detects, interprets & imports data from a specific website

Zotero Overview Capture icon  Click to save citations to Zotero  Appears in the address bar of your browser  Indicates that a translator exists for the page

Review  Add-on  Standalone  Online sync  Translator  Capture icon

Install Zotero 1.Go to Zotero.org 2.Click Download Now 3.Under Zotero Standalone, click Zotero 4.0 [for Windows or Mac] 4.Click preferred browser extension to install

Set Up Account 1.Go to Zotero.org 2.Click to register (upper right) 3.Create an account 4.Verify account

Set Up Online Sync 1.Launch Zotero Standalone 2.Go to Actions > Preferences > Sync and enter your account information

Set Up PDF Indexing 1.Go to Actions > Preferences > Search 2.Click Check for Installer

Save Citations From PubMed

Save Citations Multiple pages from PubMed  Select “Send to”  Select “File”  Under Format, select “XML”  Click “Create File” button  In Zotero, Import file

Save Citations From websites with Zotero translators:  Google Scholar  New York Times  CDC.gov  YouTube  Others?

Save Citations From websites without Zotero translators:  Factiva  Congressional Budget Office  UChicago News Site  Others?

Drag & Drop PDFs

Review  Drag & drop  Location bar / URL bar  Online sync  PDF indexing  Right-click save snapshot

Use Zotero with Word Word for Windows:  View the Add-ins ribbon

Use Zotero with Word Word for Mac:  Click the scripts icon to view the Zotero menu

Use Zotero with Word Word for Mac:  Display the Zotero toolbar

Use Zotero with Word  Import additional citation styles  Set citation style  Add citations: in-text or footnotes  Add multiple citations  Edit citations - add page numbers  Update citations and refresh the document  Insert bibliography

Review  Add-ins ribbon  Document preferences  Refresh  Scripts icon  Word processor plugin / add-in  Zotero toolbar
