Where does most of the garbage in the US end up??? A: oceans B: incinerators C: recycling centers D: landfills

Where does most of the garbage in the US end up??? A: oceans B: incinerators C: recycling centers D: landfills

Why recycle… To use our resources more effectively To save fuel, reduce air pollution, and reduce possibilities of contaminated water supply To save space in the landfill so we use less land for our waste Watch this video to learn more: What happens to our garbage 2:19 minutes http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Annabelle-Gurwitch-Investigates-What-Happens-to-Our-Garbage-Video

Landfills are for waste, so why should we care? So…how does a modern landfill work anyway? Please click link below, 2:43 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC1u6rJkyzA&feature=player_embedded#!

So instead of using land for more and more of this… If more of us used these to recycle correctly, we could reduce how much land we use for waste…..

Approximately 1 billion trees worth of paper are thrown away every year in the U.S. Are you recycling paper products and cardboard yet??? MTHS has been for years!

If every American recycled just 1/10th of their newspapers we would save about 25,000,000 trees a year! Are you recycling paper products and cardboard yet??? MTHS has been for years!

Recycling a single addition of this one newspaper, the Sunday New York Times, would save 75,000 trees. Are you recycling paper products and cardboard yet??? MTHS has been for years!

CRAZY FACTS!!! If you had a 15 year old tree and made it into paper grocery bags, you would get about _____of them, which a grocery store could use up in less than an hour! 7 70 700 7000

CRAZY FACTS!!! If you had a 15 year old tree and made it into paper grocery bags, you would get about _____of them, which a grocery store could use up in less than an hour! 7 70 700 7000

CRAZY FACTS!!! The amount of wood and paper we throw away each year is enough to heat 50,000,000 homes for 20 years Are you recycling paper products and cardboard yet??? MTHS has been for years!

More Facts … Throwing away a single aluminum can, instead of recycling, is like pouring out 6 oz. of gasoline on the ground… the fuel it takes to make a new aluminum can. On the other hand…. Recycling only 1 aluminum can, saves enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours

Celebrate Recycling Day [and every day of the year] November 15th, 2012 Make one simple change - if we ALL did, imagine the impact we could ALL make! Save money, save time, save our home!

Recycle at home, school, work, wherever you see bins like these. What can you do?....... Recycle at home, school, work, wherever you see bins like these.

Have you seen these around school lately Have you seen these around school lately? As a community, we must learn to correctly use them for a cleaner greener environment. What do you notice? Same title? Are they the same opening shape? Does trash have only ‘trash’ in it?

In the next few slides you will learn what is considered to be recyclable in Phoenix.

Phoenix Recycles Plastic All hard plastic containers including: buckets plastic jugs bottles with or without caps

Phoenix Recycles Paper cardboard food boxes junk mail wet strength paper board newspaper magazines phone books juice boxes shredded paper (placed in clear plastic bags)

Phoenix Recycles Glass glass bottles jars any food grade glass containers

Phoenix Recycles Metals, too aluminum cans metal cans small metal appliances empty aerosol cans (No Paint, Pesticides, Oven Cleaners). http://phoenix.gov/publicworks/recycling/recyclables.html

Don’t forget Styrofoam! AKA - Polystyrene Styrofoam is one of the major things to avoid as much as possible because: They use fossil fuels to make it When burned, it releases toxic fumes into the air we breathe It takes hundreds of years to decompose in the landfill Styrofoam recycling is slowly expanding in the US, but at present there is still too much of this material that ends up in our landfills. It is estimated that 30% of the total solid waste volume dumped in landfills is polystyrene

Why do we want to avoid using Styrofoam? It’s easy to recycle It takes 3 months to decompose in the landfill Styrofoam recycling is slowly expanding in the US, but still it is estimated that it makes up 30% of the total solid waste volume dumped in landfills

GOOD NEWS Metro Tech has a Styrofoam compactor! This will be in operation soon and will take care of the Styrofoam materials used in our cafeteria! Until then…
