THE MORNING OF THE TEST Set three alarm clocks Eat a breakfast high in protein (bagel and peanut butter) Do not study on the morning of the test Avoid people that make you anxious Avoid talking about the test content Walk if nervous or anxious

TEST TAKING All tests are timed at one (1) minutes a questions plus 20 minutes Most of the questions have a stem and four (4) distracters

STEM Which type of nurse would care for the newborn infant who is in serious condition?

4 DISTRACTORS A medical/surgical nurse. A labor and delivery nurse. A neonatal intensive care nurse. An post-partum nurse.

TEST TAKING TIPS Cover up the distracters Read the stem Underline the 3 key words Answer the question before you look at distracters; give all possible answers If you can’t answer the question skip it and answer the next question

LOOK AT THE STEM Make sure you know what the question is asking Look at the adjectives – words that describe such age of client, “immediate” postoperative, “chronic”, “acute” Is the question asking what the nurse would do FIRST? Is the question asking about “warranting immediate intervention”

STEM Which type of nurse would care for the newborn infant who is in serious condition?

LOOK AT THE DISTRACTER Examine each distracter one at a time Notice the adjectives – is it “once a day”, “right” or “left”, “every 4 hours”, “every shift” Notice words such as “always”, “never”, “only” If the distracter is not something you thought about mark it out

If it is something you thought about do not mark it out Do not select answer until you look at all 4 distracters If you mark out two answer and there are two left think about which directly effects the patient, which addresses airway Mark answer out to side of question and do not change answer

4 DISTRACTORS A medical/surgical nurse. A labor and delivery nurse. A neonatal intensive care nurse. An post-partum nurse.

After you answer all the questions you know than go back and attempt to answers the questions you skipped This means that within 30 minutes you should have looked at every question on a 50-question test

IMPORTANT You must remember that this content will be tested throughout the rest of the nursing program. This nursing program progresses from simple to complex and the skills you learned this summer will be implemented in clinical and tested throughout the next four semesters.

FUTURE TEST INFORMATION This information is a basic foundation. These type questions will be used throughout the program but the difficulty will increase. There will be two math questions at the end of each test in Level I and II.

There will be a different type question consisting of multiple answers that will be discussed in Level I. The questions in Level I are more knowledge based then Level II more application type questions. In Level III and Level IV most of the questions will be application and evaluation.
