The 5E Model of Instruction 5 SST 8th/Physical Science

October Sky Homer Hickman Chemical Reactions Essential Question: How do different substances interact with each other? Student Outcomes: Students explore the properties of chemical reactions. Students investigate features of a chemical reaction, and plan and conduct a scientific investigation to test a hypothesis. Students initially encounter information about chemical reactions by reading about rockets in an engaging text. (Question the Author) 6 SST 8th/Physical Science

Learning Strategy: Question the Author A Russian Traveler The day is Friday, October 4. The year is People in many parts of the earth turned on radios and heard strange news. “Russia has used rockets to put a new moon in the sky” said one station. 7 SST 8th/Physical Science

Modeling the Literacy Strategy A tiny new moon is a metal ball. It has a radio in it. The radio goes “Beep! Beep! Beep!” as the moon travels along. The new moon is named Sputnik. The ship is just big enough to carry a little dog. The ship sends out signals about the dog. Everywhere people became interested in rockets and spaceships. Russia has used rocket to put a satellite into space. The tiny satellite is shaped like a metal ball. 8 SST 8th/Physical Science

Question the Author (it takes practice!) Students read and talk about ideas the author is trying to get across. What is the author trying to tell you? Why is the author telling you that? Is the message clearly stated? Recast confusing ideas in clearer language How could the author have stated the ideas in a clearer way What would you want to say instead? 9 SST 8th/Physical Science

Read and Question the Author October Sky, Chapter 5 Look for experiments involving chemical reactions in the text. What do scientists consider as evidence of chemical reactions? Record responses. The 5E Learning Cycle Engage 10 SST 8th/Physical Science

Explore Observing Matter: Carefully add one piece of foil to the liquid and observe until no more reaction is occurring. Decant liquid into fresh cup Repeat first step. Decant liquid into fresh cup Repeat again. 11 SST 8th/Physical Science

Explain Predict what will happen to the third piece of foil during the experiment. Record results from the three trials Ask students what they conclude happened to the the third piece of foil. 12 SST 8th/Physical Science

Students present their hypothesis, experiment, and results to the class. Ask them to confer with their groups to explain the results in terms of a chemical reaction. Evaluate 13 SST 8th/Physical Science

Elaborate What change might you make to the aluminum-copper chloride reaction and the effect you might observe? Make an experimental design for the new procedure. 14 SST 8th/Physical Science

Teacher Reflection How does the student work provide evidence that students understand the properties of chemical reactions, and that they know how to plan and conduct a scientific investigation to test a hypothesis? What instructional strategies used in this lesson promote student understanding? How do you know? How does the literature selection support student understanding of the science concepts and processes? How would you modify instruction to ensure understanding of outcomes by all students? 15 SST 8th/Physical Science
