The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System by Joanna Cole Moon Motion Essential Question: How does the appearance of Earth’s moon change in the sky? Student Outcomes: Student’s demonstrate their understanding of how the moon changes during a month. Students observe and record the phases of the moon during a 6-week period. Students use “Contextual Redefinition” to find word meanings using context within the literature selection (Contextual Redefinition) 6 SST 3rd/Earth Science

Learning Strategy: Contextual Redefinition Contextual Redefinition is used by the students as method of checking their understanding of new vocabulary and related concepts. The strategy encourages students to look for meaning by using context clues. 7 SST 3rd/Earth Science

Modeling the Literacy Strategy Identify terms that come from pages 11-13 in the book: Moon, crater, gravity, meteorite, orbit, reflect, New Moon, Crescent, Gibbous, Quarter Moon, and Full Moon. In groups students compose a sentence or short paragraph that uses each word. 8 SST 3rd/Earth Science

Contextual Redefinition (it takes practice!) Help students realize that context can provide clues to the meaning of new vocabulary. Help faltering readers experience the thinking processes involved in deriving a definition from context. 9 SST 3rd/Earth Science

Share your contextual definitions then revisit the text and other resources to be sure of the words. The 5E Learning Cycle Engage 10 SST 3rd/Earth Science

Explore Take Moon Calendars home and record what the Moon looks like each night (or morning). After a week compare to the predictions. Record the weeks observations on a class Moon Calendar Observing the Moon The vocabulary you have learned will be useful in the next month as you compete you Moon Phase Calendars. Take time to predict what you think the Moon will look over the next 6 days. 11 SST 3rd/Earth Science

Explain After a month a discussion of observable patterns and comparison of all the data is summarized. Using Moon vocabulary each phase of the Moon is labeled and described by groups. 12 SST 3rd/Earth Science

Evaluate Using cut out images of the phases students will order the phases correctly to illustrate a full cycle. Students predict of the next phases of the Moon given a current phase. 13 SST 3rd/Earth Science

Elaborate Have the class predict what the Moon will look like each day for the few weeks, then check by taking turns observing. Have students model lunar motion and identify each phase. Make a Moon Phase Flip-book 14 SST 3rd/Earth Science

Teacher Reflection How does the student work provide evidence of student understanding that the Moon moves in predictable patterns? What instructional strategies used in this lesson promote student understanding? How do you know? How does the literature selection support student understanding of the science concepts? How would you modify instruction to ensure understanding of outcomes by all students? 15 SST 3rd/Earth Science
