Contact by Carl Sagan Seeing Stars Essential Question: How can observations from Earth give us information that explains the structure of galaxies and the universe? Student Outcomes: Describe the structure and scale of objects in the universe. Model a star field representing common properties of stars. Use a “Learning Log and KWL Plus” to organize information from text (Learning Log/KWL Plus). 6 SST 9-12/Earth Science

Learning Strategy: Learning Log/KWL Plus In this lesson the Learning Log is used to gather information from the text selection as well as reference materials needed to complete a KWL chart. KWL Plus is used to organize the information and demonstrate student learning. 7 SST 9-12/Earth Science

Modeling the Literacy Strategy Begin with a brainstorm, all you Know and Wonder (Want to Learn) about the structures that make up a galaxy. Recording these ideas in a Learning Log will help when new learning is added as the model is developed. Reading chapter 19 in Contact will provide information to organize with the KWL chart and record in the Learning Log. Ideas from the KWL chart will be reorganized in the Learning Log and additional understanding added as the work progresses. 8 SST 9-12/Earth Science

Modeling the Literacy Strategy After reading Chapter 19, what do you now have to add to the KWL Chart in the L column for what you learned? How will you fit this new information or vocabulary into a summary of galactic structures? 9 SST 9-12/Earth Science

Learning Log/KWL Plus (it takes practice!) KWL Plus A reading-thinking strategy that requires the reader to identify what they know (K), want to know (W), and what is learned (L), setting a purpose for reading. Plus – mapping and summarizing the original the information from text to process it further. Learning Log This written record of what and how a student is learning over time increases student awareness of their own learning process, identifies gaps in learning, promotes fluency, and develops metacognition. 10 SST 9-12/Earth Science

Looking at the recording sheet for Seeing Stars, record what you can observe and think about what you still need to know. The 5E Learning Cycle Engage 11 SST 9-12/Earth Science

Explore After reading chapter 19, what terms or descriptions can you add to your Learning Log? What can you add to your KWL? Observing Structures Observe a displayed model of a star field. What can you describe on the Seeing Stars Reporting Sheet? 12 SST 9-12/Earth Science

Explain As a whole class, contribute to the concept map or outline being built to summarize galactic structures and their relationships. What terms can be added to a Word Wall and your own Concept Map? Is there anything else to add to the KWL? 13 SST 9-12/Earth Science

Evaluate Use the recording sheet prompts to evaluate individual responses. Students are able to construct an accurate Concept Map, referring to their Learning Log. 14 SST 9-12/Earth Science

Elaborate Use the star field for a parallax investigation. Compare the movie Contact to the book. Further investigate, and concept map, EM spectra, star life- cycles and related topics to add to the class Concept Map. 15 SST 9-12/Earth Science

Teacher Reflection How does the student work provide evidence of student understanding about the scale and structure of galaxies in the universe? What instructional strategies used in this lesson promote student understanding? How do you know? How does the literature selection support student understanding of the science concepts? How would you modify instruction to ensure understanding of outcomes by all students? 16 SST 9-12/Earth Science
