The Great Groundhog By: Alaina Luce

What does my animal look like? The Groundhog has brown fur that is very soft. It’s 24 inches from its nose to its tail. It usually weighs 9 to 10 pounds and has very small ears. They have thick bodies, short legs and black eyes.

What does my animal eat? The Groundhog is a herbivore that eats: Clover Grass Wildflower Insects Tree bark and branches if it is very hungry

Where does my animal live? Groundhogs are usually seen in the Eastern United States and Southern Canada. They live underground in a burrow. The Groundhogs prefer to burrow near the edges of forests or in open fields.

What adaptations does it have to help it survive? How It helps the Animal Survive Hiding in burrows To get away from predators Brown fur To blend in with its surroundings Making a whistling sound with its teeth To scare predators away Grinding its teeth to warn predators

Predators Wolves Foxes Coyotes Eagles

Reproduction The Groundhog is born alive so it is a mammal. They can have 3 to 5 babies at one time. They are born with no fur and are blind. Their mother feeds them milk for 6 weeks.

Here are some amazing facts: One amazing fact is that empty Groundhog holes are often taken over by skunks, foxes, rabbits or other animals. Another interesting fact is that a Groundhog warns their predators by making a sound like a whistle or grind their teeth. They are in the rodent group.
