1 Prairie Dog The prairie dog is a diurnal mammal with yellow fur, whitish belly, and a short bushy tail. Its home is in burrows called towns. The prairie dog is a herbivore that eats grasses, roots, weeds, and blossoms. Its enemies are hawks, owls, eagles, ravens, coyotes, badgers, ferrets and snakes. The prairie dog survives in the desert by making different sounds, or “barks,” to warn off predators and they can run up to 35 miles per hour for short distances. Image from:
