install

Will your hardware work? Most things are compatible - a few are known not to be

Install Can be booted from CD directly or from floppy Can also install over network via NFS FTP or HTTP Can install from disk image on local harddrive

CD Install Our install will be from the CD on direct boot In some cases you may need to change setup options in CMOS to allow boot from CD first

Insert CD and boot system - your PC should stop at a text mode display asking your install preference PRESS ENTER to Select Graphical Mode STOP AT THE FIRST SCREEN LET'S WALK THROUGH IT

Language Selection Select English and click Next You will have an opportunity to select additional languages later

Keyboard Select the default keyboard (assuming you DO have a 101 key standard keyboard) "Dead Keys" are compose key sequences that allow foreign characters and things like backspace - H

Suppose I need to change it? You can run kbdconfig after install to change the keyboard type

Select Mouse Generic 3 button PS/2 mouse will cover most cases Select MS Intellimouse if you have a scrolling mouse

Change your mouse? mouseconfig will allow you to change type after install

Disk Partition Select method: Auto Disk Druid fdisk

auto partition Select - "Remove all paritions on this system" radio button Review check box should be checked

disk druid Format should be "YES"

Basic Partition /boot at 50 Meg or so swap at twice RAM up to 1 Gig / for remainder of disk I wouldn't recommend fewer partitions or less swap

More Partitions Advantage of partitions –separates / from user home directories and programs and files –easier to do backups on partitions You can unmount and backup one partition while the rest of the system is online –prevents overrunning all free space –you can remount somewhere else

Less Partitions Disadvantage of partitions –You can run out of space on a partition while more is available somewhere else –more complex installation –mounting issues

Boot Loader Select GRUB the default

Boot Loader Password No password Uncheck box

Network Configuration Uncheck DHCP Check :Activate on Boot Set IP Addresses as directed

Reconfigure network? Use netconfig We'll also learn how to do network configuration manually

Firewall Select NO firewall

Add additional languages Don't add extras Only English (USA) should be selected

Timezone Click on map to select Los Angeles

dateconfig dateconfig will allow you to changedate after install

Set root password and add one user Root password as letmein? user name is machine name (alpha, bravo etc) password is password?

authentication Leave at default

Install EVERYTHING (not) Normally I recommend installing everything to prevent dependency problems down the road WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH SPACE

Install Check everything except: –Do NOT check Dialup –Do NOT check Laptop –Do NOT check Games/Entertainment –Do NOT check Everything CHECK EVERYTHING ELSE

Individual Selection You shouldn't be here on this install

Dependency Check If you select individual packages you might select a package without selecting all the required supporting pieces

Video config This should match your preinstall choice

Take a break.....

Virtual Terminals While you're intalling take a look at the virtual terminals VT1 is the installer output - This is where the output would be if you selected "Text Mode" on the first install screen VT2 is a root shell prompt VT3 will have the installer log output (install steps) VT4 will have the syslog output. This is where you look if you are having a problem (DO NOT RELY ON THE GUI MESSAGES FOR PROBLEM INFORMATION) VT5 has additional messages VT7 is the GUI installer

Boot Disk Skip it You can always boot from the install CD

Select a Monitor If the monitor is NOT listed select the probed suggestion

Custom Select High Color 1024 X 768 GNOME Graphical Login

Xconfigurator Xconfigurator allows you to change the graphics setup after install I captured the shot in a GUI window, but you should run it in text mode (ie use a virtual terminal)

How'd We Do????
