Penguins are Birds They cannot fly. TheyThey have black and white feathers. TheirTheir bodies are like torpedoes. They can swim around 15 miles an hour. TheyThey spend as much as 75% of their lives underwater.

There are many types of penguins. Here are a few. Adelie Pengui n Chinstrap Penguin Macaroni Penguin Emperor Penguin

All of the species live in the Southern hemisphere. Many live at the South Pole on Antarctica. But some don't live in such cold places. They are found on the coasts of South America, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the Galapagos Islands. The Emperor penguin is the only species that breeds and nests in Antarctica through the frigid winter.

A penguins normal body temperature is around 100 degrees. So how do they stay warm? They stay warm because they have a layer of fat under their skin called “blubber”. On top of the blubber they have special feathers called “Down” to keep them warm. On top of the Down is an outer layer of feathers to seal in the warmth. Finally the penguins rub oil from a gland onto the feathers to make them waterproof and windproof. Even with all this protection penguins still need help staying warm. They will often huddle together to help each other stay warm.

What do penguins eat? Krill A penguins main diet consists of fish. They also eat squid and crustaceans. Another food penguins eat is krill. Krill are small shrimp-like animals. They also drink salt water. They have a special gland in their bodies to help take the salt out of the water.

During mating season penguins have a special nesting place on shore. This special area where penguins mate, nest, and raise their chicks is called a “ROOKERY ” When penguins mate they usually stay together for many years as long as they have chicks. They sing to each other so they can learn to recognize each others voices. So what’s your name? Pengy, What’s yours? ROOKERY

As soon as an egg is laid the mother penguin must rush out to dinner leaving father penguin to care for the egg. When mother penguin returns the father heads for dinner. When the chick hatches it automatically begins calling so it’s parents can recognize it’s voice. As soon as the chick is strong enough both parents will leave for the ocean. When both parents return with food they recognize their own chicks voice out of many chicks in the rookery. Newborn penguin Penguin Daycare Fuzzy Penguin Penguin Chicks
