How do children learn to read? In the mother tongue… They read pictures They recognise the word shapes They associate words with images They associate words with meanings They ‘read’ words in chunks of sound They use strategies to decode new words

And in a second language… It’s very similar … except sometimes: There’s a different script The words work differently There are differences between sound and spelling

How can Penguin Kids help?

Penguin Kids Stage the introduction of vocabulary and grammar to match the language and cognitive development level of the student

Penguin Kids Mimic the ways children learn to read: From reading pictures To recognising word shapes; To associating words with images; To associating words with meanings; To ‘reading’ words in chunks of sound; To using strategies to decode new words.

Using stories in class ContextTPR Pre-reading, while-reading and after-reading activities RepeatabilityUnderstandingFun

Pre-Reading Activities Why and How? Activate knowledge Pre-teach vocabulary Introduce theme Prepare for reading: Make it magic and fun! Let’s take a look at one of my favourites…

Know him?

Before we start reading Find out if students know this story Elicit where the story takes place? Where does the Darling family live? Check what students know about London. You can speak about families using the Darling family as an example. Children can use their family photos to present them. Pre-teach the needed vocabulary. Use pictures from the book as much as possible.

While-Reading Activities Why and How? Check understanding ○ Q and A Scaffold learning ○ Predicting Step away from the text ○ Cover and retell

While-reading activities from the factsheets

After Reading Activites Why and How? Make a book Make a mask Paint a scene Write a review/story outline Write/sing a song Make a puppet Act it out Story extension…

After-reading activities

After-reading activities. London poster Materials: pictures or video clips of famous London sights; large sheets of paper; smaller sheets of paper; colored pens / pencils / paints; safety scissors; glue Ask students which city Peter and Tinker Bell visit in the book. Explain to students that they are going to make a poster about some of the famous sights in London. Ask the students which famous sight is in the book. Show the students some pictures or clips of the famous sights in London. Students then draw or paint pictures of some of the sights, then cut them out and stick them onto the larger sheet of paper to make a poster, then label pictures.
