2 Summer Reading Camp: Instructional Manual and Training

3 Big Ideas Students can benefit from summer school instruction if:
Allocated time is adequate. Summer School - 4 to 6 weeks, 3 hours a day, days a week On-level small group instruction is provided. Assessment is used to determine instructional groups. Students are grouped based on current reading levels using one minute fluency measure and San Diego Quick. Further grouping is based on program assessments.

4 Big Ideas Students can benefit from summer school instruction if: Instruction focuses on critical areas of language arts: decoding, encoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. Evidence-based programs are used.

5 Big Ideas Students can benefit from summer school instruction if: Explicit instruction is provided. (I do it. We do it. You do.) Responses are elicited from students throughout lessons. Adequate practice leading to mastery is provided. Teachers are provided sufficient staff development.

6 Primary: Students entering 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades

Explicit instruction on vocabulary words. (Lists of appropriate read-aloud books, target vocabulary words, and student-friendly definitions are included in the training manual.)
