RI High School Diploma System Requirements January 2013

Overview of the Diploma System Requirements Class Requirements: 20 coursesPerformance Assessments: Chosen by LEAState Tests: Partial proficiency The 2011 Secondary Regulations set up a multiple measures system that requires students to meet all of the measures in order to earn a RI HS Diploma. It is important to communicate to students and families that the NECAP assessments in Reading and Math are just one of those required measures.

RI 2011 Math NECAP Scores The purpose of the progress plan and associated interventions are to move students from a score of 1 (substantially below proficient) to a level of proficiency that indicates progress.

State Assessment Opportunities and Alternatives Junior Year: October NECAP Senior Year: October NECAP Demonstrate Progress Senior Year: Spring NECAP Modified Version Senior Year: Approved Alternative Assessment Accepted in Lieu of NECAP *Senior Year: Option of additional time until proficient for graduation Progress plan Summer math programs virtual math program (VLMM) Parent engagement Progress plan After school programs and tutoring Additional math programs Parent engagement School support for alternative assessment completion Provide additional support or alternative pathway for student to continue toward high school diploma or other credentialing System Level Safety NetsStudent Level Supports * Waiver Eligibility Considered with school documentation of medical illness or other rare instances of student inability to access standardized tests

According to the 2011 Secondary Regulations, students taking the NECAP for a second time are required to score partially proficient (2) or demonstrate progress. See Secondary Regulations Initial Guidance document, pages 13 and 14 of the guidance.Secondary Regulations Initial Guidance The chart below illustrates the difference between a student earning a 2 on the second administration of the NECAP test and a student demonstrating that they have made progress toward partial proficiency.

The question below represents the level of cognitive difficulty of the types of math problems that students must complete in order to demonstrate Partial Proficiency (level 2) or show progress toward proficiency. In the graph on the previous slide, a student would have to successfully complete 6 -7 of this type of problem to reach the required level of progress. Sample NECAP Question
