(c) St Patrick's Cathedral Grammar School Form Industrial relations act 1990

(c) St Patrick's Cathedral Grammar School Form What are Industrial relations? Industrial relations refers to quality of the relationship that exist between the owners or employers and employees in an organisation.

(c) St Patrick's Cathedral Grammar School Form How can the industrial relations act protect the workers? This act protects the employees from being sued for losses of production or damages to machinery, caused by a strike or industrial action, provided the correct procedures have been taken. The act also outlines how they can picket.

(c) St Patrick's Cathedral Grammar School Form What are the correct procedures for a strike? Union gives notice of a forthcoming vote to members? Secret Ballot among members. If the majority of the votes are in favour of industrial action and the union decides on a strike, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) must be notified. The employer must be given 1 weeks notice of the forthcoming strike.

(c) St Patrick's Cathedral Grammar School Form Picketing Workers can conduct a peaceful picket outside their place of work. They can be joined by trade union representatives. They can try and persuade other workers and customers not to enter their employer’s premises, but cannot stop them.

(c) St Patrick's Cathedral Grammar School Form Talking Despite this act it is always recommended that before a union is called in, that employees try and talk about their problems with their employer and settle their differences.
