Most: Explain how influential they can be upon large business.

2 Trade Unions TUs exist to represent the interests of employees in a particular organisation. They negotiate on their members behalf on: The right to useful employment The right ot organise and join Trade Unions. They right to use ‘COLLECTIVE BARGAINING’ – joining the workers together to form one voice. - National Unions – PPTA, PSA (Public Service Association). 4. The right to strike and take industrial action

3 Advantages / Disadvantages
One person speaks for the whole group Better working relationship between employees and companies Negotiators are skilled in their job Disadvantages Power to the union Reduce workers motivation Increase labour costs

4 Influence TU can be very influential as they represent the rights of a company’s most important asset. They can have the power to stop workers from working. It is imperative that businesses have a positive working relationship with TU and negotiation and consultation is ongoing

5 Industrial Action DRASTIC
Strikes – loss of production, bad publicity, bad relationship between staff and managers Picketing – when strikers wait out the front of the company demonstrating against the company (often leads to violence!) LESS DRASTIC Overtime ban Work to rule Go slow Non cooperation

6 Employer Associations
Organisations that look after the interest of the businesses / management. Aim to balance union power and increase productivity in industries Provide advice and guidance to businesses and management

7 Industrial Action (employer’s)
Closer supervision Pay freeze Lock out Closure of the company QUANTAS………
