Collaborative Models of Education ADN-BSN Top Ten Countdown of Breakthroughs and Barriers Presented by: Diane Morey, PhD, MSN, RN,CNE College of the Canyons

The Ah Ha Moments … Breakthroughs! 1.Elimination of Pediatric and Adult/Aged Courses from CSUN’s requirements for RN to BSN as being redundant. (electives will be developed by CSUN to focus on any content from these courses that is beyond prelicensure) 2.Pathophysiology course: Student’s can take by credit by exam

The Ah Ha Moments … Breakthroughs! 3.Introduction to Professional Nursing will allow for demonstration of competence for already acquired knowledge/skills and complete requirements only for a limited number of weeks of non-repetitive content. 4.Dynamics of Nursing Leadership: will require students to demonstrate acquired knowledge by completing all exams with other students. They may attend all lectures if desired or opt out of select content that may repeat pre-licensure work.

The Ah Ha Moments … Breakthroughs! 5. HSci 306 Supportive/Educative Nursing (3 unit lecture) was originally to become an elective. It will be revised to reflect an increase in health literacy content and focus on teaching families, groups, communities.

I Have a Lump on My Forehead … Barriers 1.Logistics of students taking courses at two schools concurrently with different academic calendars and limitation of times of course offerings. 2.COC cohort students may find that enrolling in COC and CSUN courses simultaneously is not workable in terms of outside jobs and/or course workload.

I Have a Lump on My Forehead … Barriers 3. Number of units: By not accepting the lower division nursing courses as directly equivalent to upper division nursing courses that are the same pre-licensure courses creates a barrier to a more streamlined process. Students can only transfer 70 units to the CSU and must complete a total of 120 units. ADN to RN students often take more units than a generic nursing student in a CSU nursing program. (Increased units for science prerequisites above that required in IGETC, required to take 9 units of Upper Division GE unless they have another Bachelor’s degree)

I Have a Lump on My Forehead … Barriers 4.Because of CSU budget restrictions any students in the pilot group, who are not already admitted to CSUN, will enter CSUN for 1-2 semester through the Tseng College of Continuing Education. The Health Sciences Department and Nursing Program will hold class positions for these students. The students will not be able to get financial aid for such courses, will pay higher fees, and will not be categorized as matriculating students. Students are not allowed library access as a continuing education student.

Drum Roll Please … Most Surprising Outcome Still in the beginning stages….Students are enrolled currently in COC Nursing Program first semester and will take a CSUN course this summer. In the fall the students will take a CSUN course with COC’s second semester nursing program courses.

Drum Roll Please … Most Surprising Outcome Curriculum CSUN: Careful critique of curriculum to make sure it meets needs of RN-BSN students COC: Making changes to curriculum that will ultimately improve the program for ADN students and better prepare them for transfer. –Students are extremely motivated and more students are interested in this option.
